https://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/lo ... ac7f7.htmlA 36-year-old Venezuelan national fought with everything she had to ensure a thief did not escape with her passport, which was secured in her handbag.
The woman’s ordeal was recorded on CCTV footage from homes along the area in Tunapuna. She was not seriously injured in the incident.
And while the Express was told the police have several leads which they are pursuing with the aim of making an arrest, due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, the name of the victim is being withheld.
The incident took place around 5.50 p.m. on Saturday in Pasea.
The woman was walking in an easterly direction towards her home when she was approached by a man not known to her.
She attempted to avoid the man, but he came closer to her and attempted to take away her handbag.
The woman fought back and a struggle ensued. She was dealt several blows to her head and body by the assailant, but was adamant in holding on to her valuables.
Eventually, the assailant let go of the woman and walked away in a westerly direction on foot.
The woman sat on the pavement following the ordeal to compose herself.
She was taken for medical treatment and a report was made to the police.
PC Paul is continuing inquiries.
The Express was told the bag was only valued at $300. However, it contained the woman’s Venezuelan passport which she was not willing to lose.
She told police that given the current situation in Venezuela and the difficulties in securing documents, she was not going to give up her passport easily and she fought for that crucial document.
The investigators enquired about the woman’s status in this country and it was confirmed she was here legally and was working legitimately.
Police said they had identified the suspect and an arrest was imminent.
Once arrested, the man will most likely face charges including larceny, and assault with the intent to rob.
The description of the suspect was given as a man of African descent, dark brown in complexion, five feet ten inches tall.
Anyone with information which could lead to the arrest of the individual is asked to contact Tunapuna Police Station, any police station nearest to them, or they could give the information anonymously at 555 or 800-TIPS.
