A video on social media of Machel Montano performing a Hindu religious chant at a Carnival fete is generating mixed reactions from the Hindu community.

Montano was performing at Woodford Café, Price Plaza, Chaguanas, on Thursday when he called on the DJ to play him a soca beat with the volume lowered.

Montano then started to chant the lyrics for a version of a Hindu devotional aarti, popularly known as “Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva”.

“Jai Ganesh, Jai Ganesh, Jai Ganesh…,” Montano sang in part, trying to get the audience to sing along. He teased them over not singing along, asking if they didn’t know other languages and also only knowing about songs for wining, before having the music switched to “Fast Wine”.

The real beat up should be for when Hindu chutney artistes who should know better sing bhajans as chutney like General Imran who had one of the most popular chutneys last year with a bhajan or Anand Yankaran who made an entire career singing bhajans as chutney songs.
Even Hitman Prabhu several years ago took a bhajan tune and made into his popular Mr. Shankar.
