u ever been up there bro, place real nice and rural... like lavantee, but with less pests. and a tourist attraction in the mud volcano.

imo, the perimeter of the first major eruption should be the extent to which it would be affecting. but, u would have land shifting a little wider.

if is a problem, the govt could relocate the surrounding settlements.

They relocate to hdc houses.

In piparo you don't have to worry about banditry as much. Let's face it, for all the support that lavantille has gotten, have the residents elevated themselves? There is zero reason why gang violence happens in pnm areas.

Subsidence continues at Piparo Mud Volcano.

The drone imagery on 29th September 2019 shows more fractures have formed near the vent. All fractures are widening. The area has now undergone subsidence in the order of 3.4ft since 22nd September.

The man right, many people take risk by building in vulnerable areas but like to shun away from the acceptance of disaster risk.

Go read some literature on disaster risk reduction before you come here and spill your illiteracy.

Sheitty Bamsee Tokesy, there are several ways to prevent people from building in at risk areas, NONE of which is to be an arsehole like Goebbels and question it post-flood.

Piparo Mud Volcano update:

Gas continues to be expelled at the main vent with a constant hissing sound. Small pools on the northern side continue to bubble occassionally. Gas escapes along fractures heading westward as well as southward. A very small vent has appeared approximately 30ft south of the main vent and bubbles constantly.

The main changes observed over the last week has been an increase in the number and width of the fractures on southern side. Southern area has gone downward by almost a foot overall.

The northern fractured area has also gone downward but by much less approximatley 8-10cm.

Overall the area is still experiencing subsidence, now a bit faster on the southern side than the northern.

Dummy, again there are several ways to deter people from building in flood, or other high risk areas, and again dummy NONE of them are to chastise people afterwards.

Piparo Mud Volcano update -17/10/2019

Over the past 10 days subsidence has continued in the areas south of the current main vent. The rate of subsidence in this area has decreased overall with a maximum of 15cm of vertical drop observed over this time period.

The areas north of the central vent however, have been uplifted subtly by up to 20cm max in places.

Note that a fair amount of rainfall occurred over the last 10 days which can hamper the accuracy of the measurements.

Bubbles are still observed in fractures and pools on the northern area as well as fractures in the south western area. The very small vent which occurs 30ft south of the central vent still bubbles continuously.

The activity at the central vent appears to have noticeably increased over the past week with constant bubbling and occasional loud blasts shooting mud upward about a foot into the air.

Members of the the public are advised to stay away from the mud volcano due to its current heightened activity.

ODPM prepares for Piparo volcano to erupt

Image

HEIGHTENED seismic activity at the Piparo mud volcano has prompted geoscientist Xavier Moonan to warn residents to keep their distance.

Recent drone topography tests, he told Newsday yesterday, showed significant changes since the last surveys ten days ago.

On Thursday, representatives from several agencies met with residents who live around the volcano and spoke to them about a possible eruption and relocation. Moonan, who works with Touchstone Exploration, said, “Bubbles are still (being) observed in fractures and pools in the northern and southwestern areas. Activity at the central vent has noticeably increased over the past week."The volcano last erupted in February 1997.

Last month, residents said it began to "rear its head" again, and reported hearing rumbling at nights, coupled with the pungent odour of sulphuric gas.At the meeting, ODPM CEO retired Maj Gen Rodney Smart told Newsday the agency was working with scientists to determine the best course of action.

"There is an evacuation plan in place, but due to the nature of the problem, it is being constantly revised to ensure the safest route is used," he said.Chairman of the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation Henry Awong, is hoping more can be done for the people who live in close proximity. He said the imminent threat of an eruption has them nervous, but uppermost in their minds is the extent to which relocation will affect them financially.

Awong said, "There is no genuine effort at the ministry’s level to provide compulsory evacuations for people closest to the volcano."Smart said if it becomes necessary, evacuation will be mandatory and more than likely, he added, “It would be permanent.”The next meeting will be held at Cipriani Trace today at 4 pm.
