So many unknowns
Failing water pump/cooling system/troublesome thermostat ( hotter than normal engine operation)
Shaved head from a rebuild after an overheat
Someone above mentioned a problematic EGR; I didn't even know these engines came with that. I would look into this closer given my lack of info on your specific vehicle
Did the problem develop over time or it just happened one day
Not a fan of decarbonization that runs the cleaner through a running engine. Port injected engines generally have very little to clean (unless something is wrong) as gasoline is a pretty good solvent.
