Need advice about importing a foreign used car

Postby pearlsamuel » February 17th, 2023, 8:57 am

Hello All,

Can anyone advise on whether an individual can import a used car from Japan without going through an importer? If yes, what is the procedure?

Note: There is someone in Japan who can purchase the vehicle.

Thanks for the great responses. Everybody trying to save a dollar now but seems like we should not try to do that! Will fight up and if I don't get thru, no scene!

Do a search. There is a thread where someone documented his process of importing a car personally.

The main steps involve finding a reliable shipping company that can handle the export, getting the car inspected and deregistered in Japan, and then arranging for shipping. Once it lands, you’ll have to deal with customs, pay import duties, and ensure it meets any local emissions or safety standards (that part was a bit of a headache for me, honestly). I remember spending hours on paperwork just to make sure I didn’t miss any small detail that could delay things.

Generally, you'll need to get the car registered and possibly pay some taxes or duties when it arrives. Make sure to get all the necessary paperwork sorted out, like the bill of sale and any export certificates from Japan. It’s definitely doable, just a bit of legwork on your part.
