AC overheating engine

I've noticed my car's engine temperature gauge will go into the red zone if I have my air conditioner on for more than a few minutes. If I turn off the A/C, the temperature gauge hovers at about mid-level.


I've never seen this before any have any tuners experienced this before and should i Check the AC or Pressure test the radiator?

Could be A/C needs to be looked at or radiator running too hot.

I was thinking it could be the water pump but it would happen no matter if the AC is on or Off

try changing the radiator cap first. If that dont work change the radiator

How much fans your car has?
Check to see if the ac fan coming on when u put on the ac.

Type of automobile and engine would help other diagnose your car, some cars have one cooling fan some got 3 and 2 etc etc

2 fans rad and ac
i replaced my rad fan with a cheap chinee one when i couldnt get one. it caused my car to overheat when the ac was switched on.
back to original fan and no more issues

1 radiator fan spinning to slow or 2 the radiator is clogged you need to have a radiator man cut it open to clean it.

Its usually a problem of the radiator clogged up with gunk. The reason it only overheats with AC On is its very obvious a AC compressor uses a lot of power have you seen what a home AC does to your electric bill? thats an indication!!!

You should not try to give advice. A/c isnt using power thats why it overheats. The condenser is now doing heat exchange as well as the radiator and they heat soak each other hence the need for 2 fans.

Could be your coolant needs changing as well. If you use pure water this can happen. Give your cooling system a once over. When last you changed the thermostat?

I think it is the fan.

If you running double fan most likely one stop working .....the ac is fine it's doing its job by dumping heat ........

also having the same problem at the moment . Changed my ac compressor and that's when it started.
Changed rad fluid , removed thermostat , bled the system for any trapped air , cleaned radiator , ran both fans to direct power , and still problem exists when i put on the ac . Currently awaiting 2 14" flex a lite fans 1500cfm to see if that's the problem .

Hope you wired fans to pull air an not push .......also when wiring fans dey must run a rely supply otherwise fans may spin but not as fast enough it should ........hope this helps

Ohh if that doesn't help ........you've got a stuck or sticking thermostat

I miss advice from men like X2 and Dave we. Sigh, here goes:

Over heating with the ac on can be a result of many things, start with the most obvious / cheapest and move down the list, this applies to general overheating

-check for leaks, check for fans working, if not make sure they getting power with a volt meter, check for cracks in the radiator cap, drops of oil / oil sheen on the top of the coolant is a dead giveaway for blown head gasket

-sticking thermostat would cause overheating all the time but still you can pull it out and check it our replace it after 100 000 km, better safe than sorry. Check thermostat by putting in a old pot / empty tin , filling with water and heating on stove, when the water starts to bubble (almost boil) the thermostat should open, if the water boils and the thermostat not opening its defective.

- Cut a busta bottle bottom off, invert over the neck of the radiator and fill with coolant / water with the engine cold, start the engine and look for bubbles, there will be a few as the air escapes the system but several bubbles indicate a blown head gasket, this is the most likely cause for overheating problems when everything else seems ok

what kind of vehicle op .
i remember my B14 use to overheat when using a/c we change real stuff ,the problem was the main crank shaft pulley the rubber bushing between was damaged which cause the pulley not to spin normal with a/c and cause overheating , i change to a foreign used and problem stopped .

Check ur compressor. Mine was runnin continuously. Even with the ac off. Mine was a minor electrical. Urs cud be the same. Jus sayin.......

"ворвзаконе", as Cinco said check fan first. Does it overheat when in traffic and as u start driving it goes down...if yes then it is your ac fan. When u start driving cool air would replace the hot air from your radiator and A/C condenser which gets hot without a fan.

If overheating while driving normally then check for leaks, oil mixing with coolant, etc....

To check your fan just get two pieces of wire that can reach your battery, disconnect the a/c fan and use the wires to connect the fan terminals to the battery.
