7. With engine off, turn steering wheel side-to-side, while topping up the reservoir

Do not start the engine at this stage. From previous experience, the pressure from the power steering pump sprays fluid all over the place and depletes the new fluid in the reservoir incredibly fast, faster than you can supply fresh fluid via the funnel\bottle.

An extra pair of clean hands come in handy to turn the steering while you top up the reservoir

Observe the colour of the old\dirty\contaminated fluid in the transparent tubing and catch can

The simple act of turning the steering wheel side to side was enough to push the old fluid out and suck in new fluid from the reservoir? Was the pump bypassed at all? Or was the fresh fluid drawn through the power steering pump?

I end up changing the power steering fluid on both my Vitara and my pops Mazda B2500 this evening..

For the Mazda pickup, I removed both the ignition and glow plug fuses. Ran the return line from the reservoir to an empty container and placed a funnel in the supply hose. Poured fresh fluid in while my pops tumbled the engine to push the old fluid out.. worked GREAT!

For my Vitara, because of the vehicle design, I removed the main drive belt, and spun the power steering pump by hand.. While doing so, I had assistants turning the steering from side too side, while another was adding fresh fluid to the funnel in the supply hose.

Both cases, I got an excellent flush, clearly seeing all the old fluid being pushed out..

I had asked at a popular mechanic shop on Cipero St in San'do and was told that they change the PS fluid by sucking out the old fluid in the reservoir and replacing that. When I inquired about the fluid present in the steering rack, they said they can't change that.. lol

DIY FTW...

Great writeup venum .... if you don't have the time to do this urself you can also take ur vehicle to a place that has a transfuse flush system. They'll basically hook up hoses to the system, fill the flush system with new fluid, then start the vehicle and turn the steering from side to side. This will flush out the rack. Same principle.

I usually flush my brake system, cooling and power steering system every 2 years
