RB25 in a Lancer

Postby brakefluid » May 7th, 2009, 9:53 am

As the topic says, I am interested in installing an RB 25 in a lancer. Of course most obviously, the box lancer.

Before anyone starts to rant and rave about the resale value, the car is a keeper.

I know the front half is the ideal thing to look for to get all of your components but if this is not an option?

1. What to look for in the harness/ electrical? Brainbox, ignitor, fusebox, instrument panel, jack in for diagnostic, CEL wiring.............what else?

2. What is the line up pattern of the hoses for the radiator?

3. I have an original turbo lancer, so would the stock clutch cylinder work?

4. I have a stock power steering box that is leaking. This is a very very rare find in a rwd lancer. Should I replace it with a steering rack? Which rack would work? If I was to repair the box, where would I get the seal kit and who could do this for me or is it a possible DIY?

5. What type of engine mount offset am I looking at. I want lots of room to the front for my fans, radiator, condenser and intercooler. I will definately have to cut the firewall. How can I reinforce/stabalize the car in light of this?

6. Would the stock housing space of the car accommodate the gearbox? What kind of cutting to the original space is necessary?

7. How far back am I looking at the gearlever from its original location? I am thinking of using a contraption similar to those front wheel manuals- sort of like an offset shift lever.

8. Does the RB25 and SR20 carry the same yolk? As I had an Sr20 DET in the car before.

9. How can I upgrade my front suspension? Actually, what front setup could I use? The stock suspension would definately be too soft.

10. What back Suspension and diff should I use? Right now I have the 10 bolt gsr Disk brake setup. It is a hard to get set-up but too soft for my application.

I think I have asked all the essentials?

The SR would be a better choice because of the weight. With all the weight of the RB in the front of the car the back would get lighter (like a see-saw), so you'll definitley have a problem when it comes to traction.

It could be done without cutting the firewall as I have seen in another Lancer but then there was too much 'see-saw-ing'. I am thinking of making the cut out for the firewall more of an offset instead of just cutting it/ pulling it back.

That way some of the weight is displaced to the back hence lending to some traction. Additionally, I would have enough room for radiator, fans, air-conditioning (yes I like my cold breeze racing car or not), Close to original lineup of the sway bar, etc.

The shortcoming of the installation would be that the gear lever would have to be offset somehow, otherwise you would be changing gears in the back seat. Part of the engine would be under the dash board. The major problem however would be the sump pan hitting the crossmember supporting the engine.

Who knows I just might go SR but for one it is too common to see that in a lancer. And secondly, the same mods you can do on a sr is the same mods you can do on the RB with a higher potential HP.

In what application?

BTW in a drag comp. that's far from necessary. A RB25DET is far more superior than any SR20 from the start and with bolt-ons. What matters most when a comparison is made locally is the chassis in which it is installed.

im talking drag car, wouldnt want to go around corners with an rb powered lancer unless it was mid mounted

The rb30 sohc is a very popular engine over here, theres a few full bodied street cars (VL Commodores) running as fast as 8.1 and a few race cars running in the 7's

Unfortunately we don't have easy access to RB30's here, in fact most have no idea what it is. Where it'll be cheap to cop one where you're from (I'm guessing New Zealand or Australia) we'll have to pay for shipping and customs as well as the guy's profit over where you're from.

What do you got in your Sigma? Probably might be able to sway THE_FUGITIVES

you can pick up an rb30 for about $50 aud or a case of beer

My sigma runs a 2000cc astron with a to3 turbo its mechanically stock its not fast, about as fast as an sr20 s14

It just sits in the shed and gets driven about once a month, its a little fun while i build my fast car

Who knows I just might go SR but for one it is too common to see that in a lancer.

Because thats WHY they put it, because it works up nicely, If you had a Blue Bird thats a nice size car for an RB.

secondly, the same mods you can do on a sr is the same mods you can do on the RB with a higher potential HP.

False, man go spend X amount of money on an Rb and it will just make it as fast as a STOCK SR20DET, True this, yes Truuu thisss
Also find out the numbers of the fastest Rb20 powered cars down here VS the Fastest SR powered cars, Even CA18DET's will beat back RBs LOL

Rb30 bottom + rb25 head = good bye sr20

SR22 Bottom + SR16ve /SR20ve Neo VVL Head = bye bye fastest RB you could find in the world

What do you got in your Sigma? Probably might be able to sway THE_FUGITIVES

you asking out other man to run me, well probably you does get other man to.....

bottom line no fact or figures. You cannot tell me you look under the hood to see what all those guys are running.

Further, you won't be able to tell what mods are in there just by looking.
I not bashing you or anything eh, I did some research of my own and hence my conclusion.

True that, be a lil' more special, go 1JZ-GTE.

A high rpm 1JZ in a Lancer, I can see the WTFs now.
