why the front making a knock?

Postby altec » October 1st, 2010, 8:16 pm

trying to troubleshoot a knocking sound from the front. sometimes i get a knock and can feel it on the floor. This happens mostly slowing to a stop and pulling off. Sometimes i can induce the knock by gently turning the steering back and forth about 2-3 inches during idle. Things I have done
change linkage and rubber
align
change big bushing
I dont know if it is because i am now paying attention, but even on smooth roads at 40-60 km, I can feel the steering wheel very gently pulling in left and right directions and when I let go of the wheel it does not stay still but sorta goes left to right to left.
Mechanic says that the suspension is good so what are the options to solve this?

Check all rack ends, steering ends and the rack mounts.

You should change that mechanic while you at it.

altec what vehicle?

As stated before this is most likely your cradle arm, all the problems you identified points to this.

Fellas if I lock my steering all the way to the left & i move my steering back & forth (shaking it) I hear knocking that I can feel in the steering wheel. I thought was the knuckle joint because while holding the knuckle & shaking the steering I felt the vibration in the knuckle joint (But these knuckle joints are about 2 months old & OEM).

Went to the mech 2day & he said the person who installed the joints didn't adjust the steering rack & he attempted to adjust it. When finished the knock was still there, he said the rack probably going bad!

Now this steering rack problem is irritating on rough patches (practically all the roads i drive on). You can feel every hole, stone, pebble..etc, you drive over with that knock on the steering!!!
