Question about tires and deflation

Postby FD3S » July 8th, 2011, 9:20 pm

Recently I went to a tire shop to replace air in my tires with nitrogen. The guys there removed the air valve (insect) and deflated all tires while the car was on the ground. I was too late to stop them, otherwise I wouldn't bother with the whole thing.

My question is can the weight of the car with no air in the tires damage the tires in any way?

may just cause minor damages to the walls on the inside, but it depends on the length of time it stays that way,the again i may be wrong.

Yea, depends on how the lip of the rim contacts with the tyre.. Can cause minor damage depending on weight and how it rests etc..

You should state which tyre shop so that we will be able to avoid a similar situation..

Thanks

why do you need nitrogen in your tires?

Actually I had to top up air but as I passed by this placed, decided to try the nitrogen thing. I know its a controversial topic.

The sidewall of the tires didnt collapse or anything while deflated. And tires were flat only for a couple minutes.
The youths working at that place probably dint know better. Will ease them up

I think nitrogen is only for race cars. There is less expansion of Nitrogen when compared to air when the tyre heats up. The tyre heats up when parked in the sun or while racing.
Air is 78% Nitrogen. When putting Nitrogen in tyre the person don't suck out all the air and then put it so you will not be getting 100% Nitrogen.
If you have money to burn then put it

There is no downside to using nitrogen in your tyres...

Of course, the only benefits lie in the fact that it is less prone to expansion so theoretically should offer more even tyre wear and more consistent inflation..

Really, its just a matter of convenience.. If someone is lazy and doesn't like to go gas station to put air in their tyres then Nitrogen is for them.. I got it free a year ago when i bought 4 tyres and I only have to go every 4 months or so to top up 2 psi or so...

Would I pay for it? Probably not, just because I have better things to spend money on..

legit race wheels now come with 2 valve stems per rim... so you can fill with 100% nitrogen
