WTK-IS IT ALTERNATOR OR POWERSTEERING

Postby nubbiecar » August 3rd, 2011, 7:30 pm

Well i have lancer with a b14 engine,i changed the belts abt ah while.I drive to sando to arima everyday. On the morning after reaching up to my car park where i work would her a squeak and the steering does be a little stiff.Later in the day when coming back home before i could reach home it becomes tight and squeaks as i turn the steering.Well ive research and i wanted to know

1) Is the alternator related to the Power steering system?
Currently the battery is charging.however i read when it is beginning to go this may be a sign of a going alternator. Also ive noticed a sound coming form the region of the alternator

2)Is it the Power steering system breaking down?
Recently i had to top up the fluid in my reservoir.I topped it up three days ago.i checked today and noticed to change. As i said earlier when i reach closer to my destination i would get a slight tightness on the steering. After 2hrs i returned and started. No sounds while turning was heard

check to see if your steering rack is leaking you should not have to top up that fluid at all
what is the deflection of the belt? you should not be able to push the belt down more than 1/4inch

sounds like either your accessory belt(s) need some tension or they're due for a change (if you haven't changed them in a while)...the squeal accompanied by the stiff power steering indicates that belt is slipping and thus cannot drive the power steering pump properly

It could be that the belt slack or need changing or the high pressure p/s line collapse .
