I always say that a Sr20 is a excellent and well designed engine.
Nissan just needed to make a few new chassis and make some machines with the Sr20 and the rb series of engines. But then again with this modern times it's all about engine efficiency

Point taken, Nissan seem to be loosing their way, maybe it is due to the French infulence of Renault.

What I find silly is a blown head gasket on a QR 20 can be caused from the thermostat assembly unit on thermostat housing, which is a TT$300.00 part and can cause you problems. Without a guage I would have run my enging till the red light comes or possibly something merchinially worst ( this blue light on start up and red light when engine is overheating in crap) and it was the guage that showed me something was wrong, the temp would rise and hold and it is only when the temp was at a constant 100 to 120 deg the red ligh came on, the damage was already done.

While the Guage did give me, signs of a temp rise, most merchanics in Trinidad would not look at the thermostat as may of they are not electrically minded and would over look this particular overheating problem when troubleshooting, I may not have blown my gasket today if the merchanics knew the charaterstics of overheating on th QR, as most of them said, take the thermostat out, change your fans your hoses collaps under speed etc. It is with a lot of reading of blogs that lead me to my solution but a month too late.
I changed the Thermostat assy exactly 6 weeks ago, but it would seem the damage was already done as I have a high temp reading once in a while but it always came down, as when the guage was installed the temp was constant but just before changing the unit the temp would fluctulate.

QR20 needs to remain cool, end of text. A suggestion is an additioonal fan in front to bring the cooling down a couple deg.

The other serious issue with the qr20 is the balance shafts. These boys rev double times what the tach reads, you do 3000 rmp they do 6000 rpm, so if you do mods on a qr20 and do not remove the shafts or assambly once you cross 6500 the shafts would lock up, I believe they are designed to take up to only 12000 rmp anything over for a long period will lock up. The L20 B Z20B were designed with internal specs as the QR and the did not design them with balance shafts and these engines did not vibrate at all.

Hey! n ppls once u have the engine out pls change the torque converter seal in the transmission cos my xtrails own got so worn it walked right out of its position n I was pouring tranmission oil from below transmission, this is just a heads up n something to do cos preventative maintenence is better cos it can cost u a transmission. With the engine out its a very simple job as well and get your mechanic to check all vital issues n parts which u cant get to with engine n tranny installed.

You heads up appreciated, I separated the two pieces engine and transmission and changed the axel seals and tranny seals, removed the thermostats, also condemned the passenger compartment heater.

had an argument with my radiator man as i found three very small leaks that i did not know about and gave him S--T, so he threw in a brand dual core metal radiator @ 50% off and 8 months to pay, as i changed two radiators in 18 months. the metal radiators came from India and they do not hold out, cheaply built.

All I need to do is start up tomorrow and do road tests, next step is an additional cooling fan and keep an eye on the temperature gauge.

I got my used QR 20 at H2 Trading in CharlieVille Chaguanas, the guy treated me well, he gave me a QR20 not sure of the mileage, but when lifted the valve cover to inspect, i swear i was putting together a new engine, no carbon deposit at all the cams shiny as new, timing chain grey and light slick on it, Got the bare engine less, starter, alternator. compressor, injectors, throttle body, exhaust manifold for 3K. H@ has a lot of QR20 and VQ 23 and you can get any combination heads only block only full engines and bare like what I got. He can be contacted at 868 671 5461 Hansel Ramhit, a good guy really helpful, I believe he had some alternator and they looked new they were going for $850.00 which I think is great as you can buy a used on for no less that $1000-1200.

Cheers
