Nissan X-trail transmission fluid

Postby jhonnieblue » November 26th, 2009, 12:34 pm

Hey guys

wrt to the transmission fluid for the xtrail

The tag on the engine says the use nissanmatic J fluid...however this is a pain to source and find ...i have checked all the motorist around and no one seems to have it
is this the only tranny fluid i could use with the xtrail or is there a substitute oil that could be used?
its not a CVT tranny btw
Also i have been reading up on different forums and people seem divided on if to do a tranny flush while changing the fluid or if to just drain out and replace. seeing at its a 4WD tranny i just want to have all the facts to prevent and unintentional damage from happening.

There is quite a few that is actually compatable. Amsoil Universal, Amalie,Castrol Import Multi Vehicle, Royal Purple Max ATF, Redline D4 to name a few. Flush and replace. This way you remove all impurities and your new fluid remain that way for a longer period of time.

checked the xtrail manual
Castrol Automatic Transmission Fluid, Dexron-3-Mercon seems to be a decent sub to use.

What must be taken into consideration is that X-Trail has been around since 2001.
Having said that, the early models came with Dextron/Mercon fluids. Originally they came with the SR engine and transmission. After that, Nissan started production of the QR engines and transmission. It was with this switch that these Transmissions were filled with Nissan matic J. So while you are correct that Dextron/Mercon could be used according the manual, it is really for the earlier models with the SR engines. QR transmission require a different level of friction, hence the reason for Matic-J. While it may work, the manufacturers knows what work best, having done years of research and tests. Be guided accordingly.

Good day folks,

I'm looking for some guidance on the quantity of transmission oil required for a full change on a NT31 (4wd), and if there is any other areas of the drivetrain that would require a fluid change as well.

Thanks in advance.
