^ ^ ^

roadracer7 next time, just soak the weldment areas in Muriatic Acid overnight (12 hours even better) before use.

Then wash off with water and neutralize acid with a Baking Soda solution... You good to go!

^ ^ ^ IIRC the effects of Metal Fume Fever are cumulative. Just avoid doing it in future.

btw don't worry bob I was VERY paranoid too...
so much so that I delayed ALL projects for a couple years... until I could afford to buy an economical "Supply Air" Respirator system and a few masks for sanding, grinding, painting... and especially for welding.

The extra wait was worth it IMHO.

^ ^ ^ While we're on the subject... IIRC 3Ms sells a disposable Welder's respirator that can be used UNDER an arc welding mask. If available locally, that should help. If not check eBay.

^ ^ ^ bob I'm no "bodywork man" or even a welder for that matter... but I wouldn't try normal stick welding with a "buzz box." Being unable to control the heat very accurately, you may suffer too much "burn through."

IMHO the ONLY safe way to avoid that, especially for rank novices like me is with a MIG welder.

I smoked for 27 years and QUIT 15 years ago; so I didn't want to push my luck any more. The more I read, the more paranoid I became about sanding, grinding, spray painting, sandblasting & welding. Basically ALL the fun stuff!

I also found out VERY quickly that "top of the line", pro equipment would put me in the Poor House  ... so I found some good quality "Hobby" equipment instead.

This is still probably overkill for most diy'ers (and still pretty expensive for me, hence the LONG wait)... but since I have THREE projects lined up now... and who knows how many more in future (5 year old son  ), I took the plunge. I bought four helmets; these are two of them...

I have a SERIOUS problem with working for more than 15 minutes in hot weather, so I got this too...(pic later)

Yup, those are much cheaper options... Link--> 3M 7189 - Particulate Welding Respirator.

I didn't go that way because I would need a new disposable or... I'd have to remember how OLD the (TWO) cartridges were... and when they needed replacement EVERY TIME I had to weld!... Expensive (and too much hassle) in the long run!... and maybe not always available when you need it most... (weekends & after business hours  ) More important, neither option is as SAFE or as durable as a Supply Air system. That made the extra expense more logical for me.

Also, be careful about which one you buy. 3M has a Respirator that's VERY similar to the 2nd pic... It's great for the tyre-man... but unfortunately it's NOT suitable for welding...
3M wrote:•WARNING! This respirator helps protect against certain particles. Misuse may result in sickness or death... Do Not Use For: Gases and vapors, including those present in paint spraying operations, oil aerosols, asbestos or sandblasting...
Just shows how important it is to READ THE LABEL.
