My GTR - Paint carbon roof or not?

Postby paparazzi » November 1st, 2011, 7:25 pm

Installing a carbon roof soon. Can't decide whether to paint it or not. You input would be helpful. Here're some pics.

PS. I'm now sporting G2s in matte black.

wrap the CF roof in CF vinyl - will protect it against the elements ....best of both worlds

Paint it mate. While the black white (panda) theme is nice, on the GTR CF accents on just trims and add-ons are better.

Why change the roof in the first place?
its not like the 2-3lbs weight loss is gonna help you tremendously on the track when you race.

If you're going as far as to change the roof, then leave it unpainted. If you paint it, frankly, I don't see the point since the benefit on the street will be minimal otherwise.

Cuz the way I see it, this would be done more for "cool points" and appearance, than anything else

DON'T paint it. leave it as is!!! But just remember that when I apply the Ceramic nano coating it would be a bit difficult for the paint to accept on the ceramic coating.

Weight saving is 9 lbs at the highest point on the car. Its been proven by AMS to make a difference. But let's face it though, it's not a race car I'm building here. I installing it because I want a carbon roof. The weightsaving is an added bonus.

DSM_05 I agree with you benefit on the street would be nil.

My honest view is that the carbon contrast on the roof on a white GTR spoils the lines of the car. I would like to paint it (leaving a little edge in carbon or something) because just like when I painted the bonnet I don't want the car to look like an all out race car. Just tasteful carbon mods. Me knowing that the roof is carbon is enough, I don't have to display it to the whole world.

But I know once I paint it, there's no going back. I'll probably leave it unpainted for a while and see if it grows on me.

Thanks man. Front and rear glass and top of doors have to be removed along with interior roofliner and panels. roof skin peeled off and new roof skin bonded in.....PITA.

If you want to keeping it Carbon fibre look I would recommend you clear coat it, then we can apply the nano coating. This Ceramic nano coating that i applied to the vehicle is semi permanent and the manufacturer of the coating boast of a two year life expectancy. You can paint the roof after you apply the nano , but you would have to remove the coating by either using a very aggressive compound or sanding off the coating.

The coating has the following benefits
-Anti scratch improved by 50%
-Fire and flame retardant !
-Antioxidant
-Insulation property
-Anti static
-Anti acids and salts
-Excellent high gloss effect - mirror finish.
-HydroPhobic Water-repelling
-Anti Calcium effect
-Dirt-deflecting
-Easy to clean/self cleaning effect
-Weather protection
-UV - weather-resistant
Insects and flies repellent
-Anti corrosion
-No more waxing!
-Preserve car value condition

And it assist with reducing wind drag thus increasing your aerodynamics.

Let me know what you decide, I am nearly booked out for this month

Carbon pieces come either:

1) gel coated (cheaper, but doesn't look AS good. Seibon uses this for example)

or

2) clear coated (Varis, APR etc use this)

in AS sold condition. You'd want to verify which your piece comes with. From a detailing perspective, the nano coating would help with this just as it would normal paint.

Agree with this completely - my vote would be to paint it.
You said it all here:

I'm cringing at just the thought of "peeling" back the OEM roof skin though :skurry:

I guess that's the better option - you can always paint it after easily. After all, you'd want to see it in person for yourself first after all the trouble of installing it.

And you had me worried for a moment there. I gather those bronze G2s are practically priceless by now given their limited edition run. Should've known better

The G2s in HMB are my pride and joy. Couldn't possibly race with those wheels.

couldnt u just put a coat of paint so thin that you still see the weave of the carbon fibre under neath yet still keep the white look?

White carbon-fiber, colored carbon fiber or a carbon kevlar weave mix that allows color into the material.

The texture of the weave will show through the paint anyways.

All you photochoppists out there, anyone want to take a stab at overlaying a black roof on this to see how it looks?
