WTK about Kano Kroil Penetrating Oil.

Postby Sanctifier » April 27th, 2013, 3:49 pm

I am about to start restorations of a South Bend 13" lathe...

and a DeWalt 1030 Radial Arm Saw...

Both need a lot of TLC.... and $$$$ in order to bring them back to their 'former glory'.

I'm looking for 1 gallon of Kano Kroil Penetrating Oil. Image
Is it available locally... and from who?

Thanks.

I don't think I had ever seen Kano Kroil locally but if you are just looking for a penetrant it wouldnt be expensive to try ATF and acetone 50/50 mix. I remember reading a penetrant comparison from practicalmachinist.com:

OT - Penetrating Oil
In a thread in the antique machinery forum, there was a discussion what to use to free up a part. Southbendmodel34 had mentioned a study in Machinist Workshop stating that Automatic transmission fluid and Acetone mixed was the best.
I just received a newsletter today from Tim Carter mentioning the same study. He had included the results of the test, which I thought interesting.

A study done by Machinist's Workshop magazine in their April 2007 issue looked at different penetrating oils to see which one did the best job of removing a rusted bolt by measuring the pounds of torque required to loosen the bolt once treated. If the study was scientifically accurate, it turns out a home brew works best!
Here's the summary of the test results:

Penetrating oil ..... Average load

None ...................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ................... 238 pounds
PB Blaster .............. 214 pounds
Liquid Wrench ...... 127 pounds
Kano Kroil ............. 106 pounds
ATF-Acetone mix....53 pounds

Hi Imamura. Thanks for the feedback. I posted this info too.
BTW there's an UPDATE as well... It's actually Power Steering Fluid that was tested and not ATF.

Yup...

Hi Rory.
Did a check on that info on the D.I.Y. Penetrating Oil... The Author edited the info... It's "Power Steering Fluid" not "ATF" that was used.

Machinist's Workshop V20 number 2, April/May 2007, page 35
Article: Testing Penetrating oils.

The table below extracts the results table. The lower the number of pounds the better.
Interesting that a simple mix of acetone and power steering fluid (PSF) works the best!

Penetrating Oil... Average load... Price ($US) per fluid ounce
None ..................... 516 pounds
WD-40 ................... 238 pounds......... $0.25
PB Blaster .............. 214 pounds......... $0.35
Liquid Wrench ........ 127 pounds......... $0.21
Kano Kroil............... 106 pounds......... $0.75

PSF-Acetone mix........53 pounds......... $0.10 (50/50 mix)

Note from original article author:
1) These are loads required to free the test piece after 8 hours of immersion in penetrating oil.
This is probably not representative of a quick squirt just before a wrench is applied.

2) The original article states ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)was used in the DIY mix.
It was actually PSF. (Power Steering Fluid.) I corrected the table to reflect this.

No suggestions, I normally use either WD40 or a hammer, sometimes both.

Maybe Keith might have something lying around in Master Mix that they may use?
Not sure but worth a shot seeing that they have some heavy machines there that parts may cease due to the conditions they are in.

One time, I got my hands on a tin of this but for some reason it finished and was not able to acquire another since then (maybe because I never really have the need for it).
It worked well, but the severest I ever dealt with was ceased bolts on a battery stand.

Okay... The only Kano Kroil Penetrating Oil that I found so far is on eBay.
Maybe I'll order some... but @ US $101.94 / gal + shipping + local courier charges it will be awhile...
and if there are HASMAT restrictions, it may have to come by sea freight (two weeks.)

Meanwhile I bought a case of Power Steering Fluid (10 x 356 ml) for $204 and 8 x 500 ml Acetone for $188.
I'll mix a sample... test it this weekend and post the results later.
