the guy is a moron
what we call 'extractors' in trinidad really refers to a tubular exhaust manifold. I am assuming the muffler man is referring to a cast exhaust manifold when he says 'exhaust manifold'
Many new cars nowadays come with a factory tubular manifold, as compared to cast manifolds that were commonplace in years gone by
Cast manifolds are inherently less efficient than tubular manifolds. Why? They are typically designed with ease of installation and space-saving in mind, which is why they typically hug the block. A tubular manifold is a more efficient design as compared to a cast manifold, because they allow a more efficient evacuation of exhaust gasses from the combustion chamber.
A tubular manifold will not make you burn more fuel...you will actually see better fuel mileage as compared to a cast manifold, because the engine will be running more efficiently and making better use of the available fuel.
If your car has an aftermarket tubular manifold, it is unlikely to cause you to burn more fuel...a performance exhaust system can only flow as much air as the intake will allow...if your intake system is stock, then you not really gonna see any power gains / increase in fuel consumption
care to enlighten us on which shop you went to?
