whats a decent car battery for infrequent starts?

Postby wagonrunner » June 11th, 2020, 4:43 pm

Looking for a decent battery for a vehicle that is not run everyday.
Got in habit of disconnecting battery every night it is parked.
Stock engine, no amps, rewired starter.
Any suggestions?

Tried two track NS60's and they cannot do it. would not recommend.
the 1st batter was installed May 2018.
battery indicator is never green, and they always say the battery is good with some excuse why the indicator is not green
But the car passes their checks, and alternator supplies charging voltage 14.2-13.8
The 2nd battery is doign the same as the first. (drops 0.4V overnight while disconnected.) and will not start the vehicle even if it reports 12.2 volts after reconnecting. and indicator is never green).

The 2nd battery was loaned me a week in early May 2019, while they checked the orginal.
The 2nd battery has a sticker on it saying it was activated in July 2019 when it was installed in the car.

There is none but your most reliable fixes may be an Optima battery or a battery conditioner.

A lead-acid battery is designed to be charged to capacity and stay charged for maximum life. Disconnecting serves to reduce the discharge current but self-discharge is not eliminated.

Some people choose to use a larger battery. Some choose to use a deep cycle battery. Better built batteries with tighter chemical tolerances and denser plates also help.

Most vehicle specifications require that a battery start a car that has been parked at -15°C for 30 days. That is not a worst case scenario.

At locations in the Arctic, fleet vehicles typically use an engine block heater and a battery conditioner to aid in start reliability.

Unfortunately, the enemy of lead-acid batteries in the tropics is that the temperature never gets cold enough to stop the chemical processes that calcify and leach the lead plates thereby causing failure.

Update -
Power Master Battery Installed in early August 2020.
Vehicle has NEVER had a problem starting.
That NEVER cannot be stressed enough.

Battery is now left connected.
Its sometimes started after not being used for a week with no issues.

i try to start it every 3 days and idle for 30 mins, or go for a drive about the same duration (things i had to do wtiht he track which would still have failures)
It has gone over a week without starting with no issue since changing batteries.

UPDATE:
same power master battery still going strong.
Been using it most weekday mornings for a 20minute or so run. at least.
Was last started on the 21st, did the 20minute run. wasn't started till the 26th night to see if any issues, and started without a problem.
