Average annual mileage

Postby Emmar01 » December 18th, 2020, 1:42 pm

So I know this is a BROAD question, but is there an average mileage that can be estimated for a typical personal vehicle (not talking about transport or HGV)? Somewhere I read that 20-25k km per year might be a broad rule of thumb, but was wondering if anyone had more specific info.

I usually do 25-30000km per year. That's work and just going all over the country.

Worldwide 95th percentile annual user average mileage hovers at the 12,000 to 15,000 miles/20,000 to 25,000 km mark.

Not too far off. I usually do 30,000km per year (on avg). That's based on a north/south run on a daily driven vehicle.

Since I have owned my current vehicle my annual mileages were -
2015 - 12,386kms (Mix of two vehicles)
2016 - 10,669kms
2017 - 14,646kms
2018 - 15,703kms
2019 - 14,032kms
2020 - 9,036kms

Gives an annual average of 12,745kms
Also now realize Covid has knocked a good 30% or so from this year.

I actually skipped oil changes for 2020 and now started back. Less than 10k crew checking in.

for some one living South and working north it will be closer to 30,000kms

north-south highway is avg 50kms one way
south to POS is avg 60 kms one way
1 week = 600kms
50 weeks x 600km = 30,000km

with covid and working from home on a rotation in 2020 i did 8000 km for the year.

I have a question...how many times in the year you all does balance and align tyres?
You think twice a year is too much?

All depending on the road conditions I encounter. Highway and traffic I do every year to hear an a half. Rotation and balance would happen same time.
Back roads should be more often as suspension would wear more.

Ok thanks...
Even main roads are bad to. You can say 75 percent is highway and the rest is back roads and mains( these roads are not up to par but not smooth) what u think?

I have 17 inch and 45 profile tyres..Would that throw off alignment etc and thus making me do tyre service more?

I too have a vehicle with 45 series 17 but a footprint of 245 so a lil more cushioning.

If everyday you see bad road and bang through them then yes, check your alignment pretty often.

Let the report on how much is out tell you how bad your suspension goes out. Indication of bad terrain and wear.

As we have just finished the 1/2 year it looks like this year will beat back last year for lowest mileage ever for me.

Just around 4,633Kms (Jan to Jun). Lockdowns look to still be the order of the day.

My 6mths report would usually be approx. 15k kms. Currently I'm at approx.10k, so I'm already down by 5. Such are the changes to accept given the times.

Since less driving is done for covid...I guess it makes sense delay rotation..alignment and balancing of tyres.
But still hadda be on schedule for engine oil changes etc....?

Due to less driving and idling in traffic I am going with mileage.

I believe oil breaks down within time too so...
It also depends on evironment eg our harsh and dusty climate.
I does change mine every year. Oil is fully synthetic though.

Usually i service tyres every 6 months but im thinking to delay it this time since i does hardly drive the car during the pandemic. Thoughts? I wont delay oil and other maintainence tho.

It depends, remember that when the oil sits in your vehicle and is not started for some time, it tends to break down. If you’re not going out all the time, at least start your vehicle and take a small spin if possible.

For tyres, maintain them based on mileage yes but based on your driving conditions - main road vs highway driving or a mix. Best way to check them is visually and feel the interior for wear.
