Those tire pressures will be "cold" to start out with. After every run, continue to check out your pressures and adjust to keep them constant.

Most drivers are not comfortable with oversteer, so, most cars are "built" to understeer.

The concept of running a higher pressure in the rear is a faster set-up, but the driver must be able to use the oversteer to their advantage. It takes some getting used to, but well worth it when you get used to it.

I actually use that set-up on the streets too, but I do not recommend to do that for everyone.

So Guys,
what tyre pressures do you recommend starting at for a person using RE11, Z1 Star Specs, or RE01R's (ie. 200TW to 140TW) type tyres on a four wheel drive sti or evo for tight autocrosses
tyre dimensions are 235 40R17.

I am now thinking 38F and 40R?

Bear in mind that i am leaning towards purchasing the Dunlop Z1 Star Specs

Garrett Inside,
what does your car normally do at tight corners around 60km/h?
and what would you like / prefer it to do?

that wont work for him ..... remember i am running 50tw tires that i still don't think i have found the right tire pressure.

i am going to try and run 34f 38r in the next event just to see what happens .... i alread y get lots of oversteer and the car turns in great.

36F 32R in the rain ... never touched the brakes and used the oversteer and corrected

wow
I wish I could handle a car at your level. Getting better, but not nearly as intuitive as you when it comes to using loss of traction to my favour.....

Ignorant Ignis, that car naturally oversteers? Or sway bar changes were made?

no sway bars ..... the car originally understeers ...but after i changed the springs most of the body roll was gone ...then going to wider rims,
7J in front and 6J in the rear the turn in became much better .... but produces heavy oversteer in the rain. so it was just up to learning how to use it to my advantage as kirk said

guess u doing what I do with the MG, ie turn in hard and use the oversteer to tighten the line.....I do it by braking late towards the apex, and then dropping it into 1st and dumping the clutch

Wagonrunner:
at 60 on a tight corner, the front end slides(understeer) and its even worse when i go on the gas. i was however running 32F and 30 R. So i guess my front tyres were rolling to one side.
I would like a lil oversteer i guess so i think i'll try 38F and 40R next time
My front tyres are scrubbing the inner and outer edges hence rounding out the tyre.
Plus my 300TW direzza's arn't helping in the traction area either.

My ignis doesnt oversteer much at all, the only time the back started getting a little happy was at the top corner to come back down the long straight away on the reverse karting track. I think my tire pressures were badly off that day, but i still managed to put down a 97sec time. The other ignis was doing 93's however so i know i must have been doing something wrong for the gap to be that large. BTW i ran 35F and 32R.

I've never had a "dex" tyre per se I use tyres daily, this is my second set of RE01's and I'll rate the tyre a couple notches above average, but it's really not that great ( and consider my car is powered by a 4AGE 20v and is automatic so not a highly powered car in the least) yesterday I was on the M2 ring road hitting some corners and hills leading to Golconda and when I braked on the hill just before the new housing developments I got some short tyre squeal indicating a break in traction I never got that with the Advans I just stopped, haven't had the opportunity to test the wet traction yet but I'll certainly be a lot less cavalier than I was with the Advans which never hydroplaned even above 80Kmph
pressure at the moment is 32psi all round

same here - using 32psi all around and ur car has more power than mine
i had them almost 4mths now and wet traction sucks..so be careful if u wanna experiment

Garrett Inside,
good plan with that tire pressure.
if you still feel the car understeering or neutral, keep raising the rear incrementally.
what size tires you use though?

The thing is that even if you have a car that oversteers, your steering inputs still determines what the car does.

If you are very aggressive in your steering inputs vs someone who is more fluid in their steering inputs you will get 2 very different handling cars, even though it's the same car.

Remember, the driver is the best mod.

On a seperate note, I also have gone to Direzza Star Spec Z1 235/40/17 for my dedicated Dex tires. I have heard nothing but great things about this tire.

Wagonrunner:
my tyre size is 235 45R17
iguess when i change tyres i'll try 235 40R17 for a stiffer sidewall and better low end power

Advans rock, Im thinking about stealing the Advans from my wife's car, very nice tyre. 140 threadwear. Im sure she wouldnt notice.

Ive also noticed that those new Swifts are coming with some really nice Bridgestone Potenzas, also 140 threadwear.

Might get a set for the Street !!
Once u drive sticky tires its hard to go back to 280+ TW

I use these for the street.. they're not as good as the RA1's IMHO ..for the price.. prolly will be too rich for most ppl blood..

^^^ Tires must have a minimum tread wear rating of 140 or it is considered a class bump

however any tire which is OE on a car eligible for stock category may be used.
