RT08 STAGES 1 and 2 done...Powell rippin'

Postby rcadiz » March 28th, 2008, 11:33 pm

Well people it was a fantastic start to the event. We had around 1,000 people in the Hasley Crawford Stadium to check out the start of Rally Trinidad. After a beautifully sung National Anthem (by Michelle Xavier - Imij and Co), and a quick driver briefing RT08 began.

The first car off was John Powell in the S9 WRC Suby, WOW WOW WOW, very quick run but was tainted by an almost 360 spin and stall 5 feet from the finish. Next up was Paul Borne who ripped through the course with a blistering run quickly reminding the Trinidad faithful that he isn't here on vacation. Barry Mckenzie almost drove into the stadium fencing but managed to keep about 2mm away with some impressive corrections. After that we saw a quick succession of good runs by the 4-wheel guys. Betts had an axel problem on the drive through, Ainsley looked great in the 9 but is still a few seconds off the WRC boys. Steve O in the Evo 8 was simply a pleasure to watch. So far it looks like John Powell posted the best time of 2:00 min flat. Very fast for a tricky track of turns, drifts, and full u-turns.

On to the 2-wheel boys and all i can say is the Bajans are here. The Swift and the Peugot are moving. Sean Gill posted a 2:05 (almost sure) which tells you how far away from the 4-wheel boys they are. Bobby M from Jamtown looked really fast in the Mivec and was hotly contested by T&T's own Rezan Mohamed. The weekend is going to be great if all these guys can keep it together. A couple other notable mentions Junior Phillips showed what a 300+bhp RWD does on a corner. Although he spent some time trying to clean the track with his tires the crowd loved it. The flying fish starlet was very quick and could be some trouble should the faster boys slip up. Our local 2wd drivers have their work cut out for them if they are to keep up. So far everyone seems to be within about 15 second of eachother on each stage so all pretty even going into tomorrow. So Rezan, Daryl, Ansel, Roger, i hope you bring your A-game this weekend because these Bajans are out for blood it seems.

The rally heads to Rollercoaster (Morning) Jack and Jill (Afternoon) and Preysal (Night). See you there - Don't miss this!!!

P.S if i forgot to mention anyone ...sorry i was probably suiting up and missed the run. Feel free to add

real good driving by JP and Bourne...they definitely going to give a spectacular show this weekend. Was most impressed by the pug...i'm sure he had one of the fastest times on his second run...he just reappeared for the 2nd pass of that run!

Nice drifts and near misses/saves by a few on the triangle roundabout.

Going to be some good action this weekend

Robert, thanks for posting this up ...hard to focus in the office .. now I know why... at least I was able to see the cars jauntily lined up at the start of the motorcade .. all pretty wheels in a row ...

Fantastic sight to behold .. and to hear the sounds of the rally mahines making their way to the Stadium ...

Still here trying not to fall asleep .. so this was a very welcome read !!
