Scott Atwell, is the genius behind aa original subs, currently Fi, and the original founder of RE who built the original xxx. Anything he makes is absolutely amazing.

Yeah 8-) , you'll never get those again, may hit you a pm when i decide to build a front horn for one lol. Was a whole commotion when they dropped adire and split gap when dan wiggins was coassing on em lol, chad made a bold, and the right decision. Scott came in and introduced split coil which was an excellent replacement.

The original Shiva lives on in the Dayton DVC310-88. Not the prettiest of drivers, but it's not pegging the ugly-meter either, and it can move some serious air for the $$$. Only US$104 at the moment from Parts Express. This is cheaper than what the Shiva originally cost, and it's better built too.

If I was faced with the choice now, I'd still choose its Dayton cousin. The older Shiva really pegged the ugly-meter with its stamped steel basket and cheap terminals. It definitely was not a driver you'd want to show off to the public in an ass-out box design. It did move some serious air, I'd give it that. Two in a 2.2 cu.ft. sealed enclosure in the back of my Grand Vitara were good for 139dB driven by an old MTX4160 bridged down into two channels, and the amp was the clear limiting factor - the subs still had a good deal of excursion potential left. Pity I didn't have my 1.2kW Alpine amp at that time - I could have found out what those drivers were really capable of.

I wouldn't suggest using these drivers in a horn design. They're not built for that type of use anyway. Burnt coils and ripped surrounds would likely be the end result. Just buy and deploy multiples of them (two, or even four a side in appropriate vented alignments). Potential embarrassment for those who spend $$$ on bling-subs with nuclear reactors to drive them will follow.

Do you know there was a 10" cousin in the family? The ACI SV10. Same Eminence build, same 16mm Xmax, in a 10" form factor. I use one of these in my HT subwoofer. Clean response down to 20 Hz in a 2.5 cu.ft. box tuned to 21 Hz. Should've bought more when I had the chance :).

Oh, the AVAs should work. I thought you were referring to the Shivas. Dan W did put out a horn design for the 15" Tempest (which was basically a 15" Shiva), but I've never heard any feedback about it, particularly wrt durability.

Dls mw110, not the loudest but I cannot imagine a subwoofer that can transition between notes better than this.

The Dayton HO's I had for a few months imo surpassed the SQ of the Idmax which was my previous favourite.

Those subs played notes I never know existed in certain songs, especially older stuff from the 80's.

This has been my daily sub for 2 months now.. impressive sounding for the price, I power it with about 900rms & it slams without getting warm.. I wonder how much more power it can take before breaking..
