Mid-range driver choice help.(DLS or Morel)

Postby kurpal_v2 » July 29th, 2010, 5:09 pm

Im having a hard time trying to decide on which driver I should mate into my frontstage. Ive narrowed it down to either

DLS Ultimate Iridium 3

http://dls.se/en/car/prod.html?produkt=en_162

Or Morel's CDM 88

http://www.morelhifi.com/products/mob_c ... cdm88.html.

Judging on driver specs, which would be the better choice to add to my kicks? They will be mounted realetivly close to my mid-bass(morel elate) and my tweets(DLS) are dash mounted fireing at each other.

Thanks.

frequency response, is a bit wider can go a bit lower,
higher sensitivity and the driver itself is larger

the morel however i think has a shallower mounting depth

you would also have to look at prices,

from what ive seen online the morel goes for 300 and the dls ir3 is 275 US

Honestly.......in your application where the midrange driver is being placed next to the midbass driver....how "low" the mid driver can go is basically irrelevant, if it was to be placed on the dash far away from the midbass then i would see the relevance.

You're really pushing the boundaries of reality if you believe any Dome mid with a very distinct excursion limit compared to a cone mid, can play down to 300hz effectively at a reasonable volume without getting considerable distortion issues.

As to which one is better:

Why don't you audition both...........not in an install, but 'open air' to see which you prefer tonally?

The Morel CDM 88 is most outstanding from my personal experience. The CDM 54 is an incredible dome as well, the bandwidth on the 54 does not go as 'low' as the 88 but in your application it's negligible.

See this is the thing Im being told but my tweeters are DLS and my midbass is morel, so which do I match?

Edhardy, when you say outstanding, in what way? And is it possible you can send me the price of both drivers mentioned along with a contact?

Hey the best thing is to take a listen for yourself, everyone interprets music differently.
While u at it give the Hybrid Ovation 4 a try. I think you'll be very pleased!
Ever thought of moving your elate 6" to your kick and adding a tweeter,"mt-23" ,jus a thought don't know how much space u have.
Further is better!

I would prefer to go the Dynaudio route, but I can't find a dealer. My 2nd choice, based on what was available locally, is DLS. It offered more favourable specs for the install that I want to do.

that 6.3 iridium setup is a dream.

one of the best i've ever used.

as for the original post i would choose the dls.....having used both

they are similar and share alot of the same structure ( at one time many believed morel built the dls drivers) , but i preferred the dls..

i now seeing this yes
boom....u have an elate

i have also used both.
I still have iridiums somewhere in my collection.
When you get this high end in speakers, the differences will not be that obvious. This is of course if your install is 100%. The choice here would not be based too much on performance but more on what you would like to try.

Clearly each brand has its fans, close your eyes and pick one to try it.
With this in mind i am very satisfied with the morel. Boom you should have come the sq event
