Power next to RCA cables? (new thread)

Postby Patman » December 7th, 2011, 8:51 pm

So my last set of power cables ran next to my RCA cables. This caused a veeeeerrry annoying sound. Because of the layout of the car, it is difficult to pass it elsewhere, so power, remote and RCAs run next to each other from front to back of vehicle. what advice could you give me? thinking along the lines of insulating properly or some sort of grounding RCA cables (is there an RCA grounding kit?)

Good 4awg should not have a problem with that amount of current.

If you have extra wire though, you can do the 2 runs, otherwise a single run distributed at the back should be sufficient.

If you haven't bought wire as yet perhaps a single run of 0awg might be cheaper than 2 runs of 4awg.

thinking about that..........but to cut cost is it wise to add the amperes of each fuse and put one fuse?

You need a fuse upfront, this is to protect the pwr wire,I think you use like 75%of what amp the wire can transfer. That way the fuse pops before the wire bun down your vehicle should it short.
At the amps from distribution block,if the dist block is close to amp then I would not use a fuse, well that depends on the amp,if regulated pwr supply then fuse is unregulated and you you trying to squeeze everything, then no fuse(providing amp has fuses)if the block is more than1 ft then I would fuse(again this is to protect wire)

when it comes to electrical & safety u never try to cut cost with short cut methods unless u rather save a few $ & risk ur car bunning down

1 main fuse upfront & another fuse block near d amp just to be on d safe side ...

well said..cut njo corners with current bro..Use a single fuse 175 or 180 and a distro block in the back with another fuses for the amps.

sounds like a plan.........1 fuse up front (180A) and a double fuse holder (125A and 55A) to distribute at the back

fuse upfront protects your battery and stock electrical system, it shouldnt be left out of any install.

you can shield the power wire itself... if you can get your hands on some copper foil you can wrap it around the power wire throughout, on the outside of the insulation. Wrap over the foil with electrical tape to keep it in place and ground off the foil. This will create a shield over the power wire and prevent noise from being induced into your RCAs. If you can't get copper foil, you can try Aluminum.

you can also try a small non polarized capacitor connected between your power wire and ground somewhere in the bonnet, this can filter the HF whine before it interacts with your RCA cables inside the car. (if you have an oscilloscope you can determine the frequency of the whine and design a filter to suit).

To be quite honest, power next to RCA cables have never caused any problems with me.
If nearby electrical flow caused a problem, shouldn't the car chassis (-ve), like the +ve cable, be away from the cables as well? It's part of the same circuit.

More than likely, you have a ground loop issue. Check for loose grounds between engine/chassis/audio equipment grounds and the battery -ve.

I'd work on the grounds as well.. Try the big 3 if you haven't done it, make sure the head unit is properly grounded as well..

it could work you should not have any discernible issues with it
