Planning a budget sq build

Postby infinite_RPM » February 22nd, 2019, 7:20 pm

Yes I know budget and sq rarely go together but I'm going to try, just want some advice on equipment and install accessories as I've been out the audio game a loong time..

I already have a decent headunit (pioneer)
And focal components in front.

Im replacing the tweeter from the components with a fabric one from Dayton audio's reference line. (Most likely a pillar install as they are too big to fit in sails)

DSP I'm using is also Dayton audio. Which I also already have.

Vehicle is 08 hatchback SGT Impreza

Plan is to run a 5 channel where the 4 channels power the 2 tweeters and the 2 focal 6" and the last channel to power a sub.

Rear speakers powered by HU

And an 8" sub.

Want to try and do as much as possible on my own

Advice needed on sub and 5 channel amp please.

Sub budget 1k
Amp budget 3k

Not cheaping out on cables so advise me on some good RCA's, fuse blocks, cables and sound deadening..

I think vexx dog recently purchased an arc audio 5ch. May be a bit more than budget but put less towards the sub.

A $750.00 can get you a decent 10".

Take my advice and scavenge the forum. I picked up near premium stuff that kicking dog. At the last ICE meet I was chatting with KREN and giving a run down of cost. built a decent system with pennies.

If you interested in dual amp setup, I see a crossfire vr series 4 ch kicking dog on fb for $500.00, that leaves 2500 for a mono.

x_factor on the forum has some amps kicking dog too, alpine etc.

KREN has an image dynamics sub in box kicking dog.

but thats just me.

ditch rear speakers, dampen front doors and work on front stage, rear fill not needed IMO.
change that 8 to a ported 10 at least or sealed if u like. more cone area.

have some good equipment on the forum used

I've used quite a few 5 channels over the years
Autotek
Directed
JL Audio (two models, two cars)
Arc Audio

The Arc audio xdi 1100.5is by far the best amp I've owned.
Yes I know that install has plenty to do with it (big up KRENtech); but it's very respectable allround with enough oomph on bass, that I found the JL to lack somewhat.
The other two were behemoths in terms of size, but had power for days.

Not sure if it can do full active, but the JL certainly can.

The ARCXDi850.5 fits your budget OP. It is priced at TTD$3000.00
For SQ purposes I would avoid a singe 8 and maybe do a sealed 10.
If the 8" is unavoidable go ported with it.
(SQ Tip: Leggo rell deadening material in the front door panels :) )

5 channel amps hard to find.. I feel I will get a 4 channel and buy a baby mono after..

I literally only need like 50-75w a channel and about 300wrms for the sub.. but I want a proper sounding amp of course...

depending on the box, components & 300 wrms for subs is plenty. might even be too much. if you only really need 50-75w/ch for the mids/highs, you don't really need that much for the subs. A sub setup running about about 200wrms would be enough.
over all, bass is really meant to compliment & add a dimension to audio, not overpower it

I see you got an amp. Was gonna suggest the Clef Labs 5 channel. What did you end up getting?

Id i5800, the amp and the dsp actually have the same brushed metal finish so I'm studying to make a nice amp rack and show them off..

Will proceed with big 3 and other wiring installation when I get pay later in the month.. will update with pics

Was offering up the tweeters I plan to put in.. but my a pillars are smaller than I thought..I may have to order the truncated faceplates..

I never heard any issues about the Subaru alternator and music..

from what I worked out all the speakers combined should get around 500wrms and it should be less than that with normal music.. the charging system shouldn't act up too much

Charging system charges at approx 12.4V unless the ecu senses load. It bumps it up to 14.4V.
Most amps rated at 14.4V and do a lot less at 12.4V so that will have OP in a shiddy situation. Mind you, the ecu cant sense the load of the sound system. Best advice I can give is use the blower with the ac off when you wanna get a lil happy with the volume.

In any case, should still at least get about 3 times the power it was getting from the deck..

The idea wasn't to make the system much louder.. I want to keep my listening volume around the same but I wanted a less harsh tweet and some reinforcement of the lower frequencies..

The amp may be overkill but the system I planned all the channels on the amp gonna be loaded to 4 ohms.. so at 4ohms with plenty headroom, distortion should be significantly lower, at least a lot lower than the head unit

OP how big are your tweets exactly and what kinda modification are you willing to do with it? You and I have the same car and I managed to fit a 3 inch mid and tweet without it being too obtrusive. Before that, it was a morel supremo piccolo tweet in each pillar and those are quite chunky.

Nicee the tweets are Dayton reference tweets 1 1/8" I think but the faceplate is big and the tweets are very heavy.. im glad I saw this as an example

On another note anybody could recommend an electronics store for stuff like wiring and connectors in South around the San Fernando area? Want to get a good distro block and wire ferules and stuff and high quality RCA's.. want to start working on this from this weekend.. also a place to get fiberglass materials..

How did you chose the angle for mounting those drivers? Did you do mock-up enclosures for them and listen to them first in-car?

Those Dayton tweeters are fairly large - which in turn means that their high-frequency response will drop off faster as you listen further off-axis.

I like the Dayton stuff. I'm currently using the RS180Ps and ND28s in my doors and ND16s in the sail panels, to pull the image up a little. I've used quite a few of the ND28s in my designs.
