WTK... How to replace radiator coolant in an altis

Postby Nav_1981 » August 3rd, 2010, 8:43 am

Guys,
Altis doing 100,000 km and i've noticed the level of the radiator coolant slightly decreasing over time. Mechanic advised that coolant life may be deteriorating.
Hence I am thinking about replacing with the original... any advice on qty. of coolant required and method for change out??

Any ideas will be gr8ly appreciated..

thnx...

Assuming the following:
-Vehicle has Toyota Long life coolant in system presently (aged).
-No apparent build-up of sluggery type residues.
-Radiator cap, thermostat and overflow retainer seal all
in good condition.
-No apparent pressure leaks on all seen and hidden hoses.
The coolant can be replaced doing the following
-Use toyota long life concentrate (1 gal) or toyota
super concentrate 50/50 dilute (2 gal + a bit).
-Drain system using plug at base of radiator and flush with
running water. On completion of flush/purge close plug.
-Introduce toyota coolant into system ensuring retention of
approx. 1 pint.
-Top-up radiator with water.Note air will be trapped in system
and you will be required to start engine and slowly add water
as air is displaced.Do not introduce any liquid either coolant or
water into the overflow bottle at this stage.
-Close radiator when unable to easily introduce any further liquid.
-What should now happen is as the engine heats up and pressure
builds (due to volume expansion ) liquid will now migrate to overflow
bottle.
-Observed shortfall in overflow bottle over the next 2 days is to be
topped-up with 1 pint of concentrate blended with a bit of water.
lost of levels is accounted for because it takes a day or two for
trapped air to be expelled.

I have green coolant currently that ran very low so I bought the Toyota Long Life Coolant which is pink. Is there anything wrong with adding pink to the existing green? Or should I flush it all out and put in the new coolant?

If I have to flush it, where the hell is the drain plug in the radiator??? Its a 2001 1.6L NZE Corolla. 3ZZ-FE engine.

drain plug does be at the bottom of the radiator. So u would need to roll up below there. It looks like a 'butterfly' screw to turn and the coolant would drain out like if it was from a straw.

Flush out the old coolant and use the Toyota one.
You dont want to contaminate the Toyota super long life coolant that you bought and was made specifically for your radiator/engine with the green one that was there for x months/years. I think the chemistry is different also and toyota recommended to use their coolant only. When I find the manual I'll post that part.
If your level ran very low suddenly, then there is a leak somewhere and you should resolve that first.

Hopes this helps ....used this one to help me (after reading the manual) do a nze with 1nz engine especially to verify the water drain Rooster assembly under exhaust manifold (between engine and fire wall)

the drain Rooster can be reached from above but after the flush the engine's hot so i reached in from the driver wheel with a ratchet,2 extensions, universal joint & 10mm socket

happy flushing....
