Help please O2 sensor for 2002 NZE corolla

Postby boogy910 » September 27th, 2011, 3:38 pm

Tuners, I havin a problem, my chek eng light on for a few years nw and i kno is d O2 sensor due to the running of a diagnostic. I replaced the original one with another from toyota and it lasted for like a year, aftr tht, I replaced it with a denso(the maker of the original) and that had some kinda different wiring. My corolla is 2002 local nze corolla, engine code- 1NZ-FE(1500cc). My main question is if any one can instruct me whether or not I can use the "universal" replacement sensor or not. Any kind help will be appreciated. Even friendly bumps are welcome. Thank you.

which sensor? there's two, one before and one after the CAT.
cud be somthing wrong with the CAT and both sensors getting the same emission reading.. wouldnt hurt to look into.

Do not go universal, spent a fortune on them tried from US to jap to original. My check engine light comes on after abt 20 mins of driving. I tried switching off while driving and starting back after neutralizing and the light stays off for the rest of the journey.
Quick fix yes, dosent solve the problem. My next move is to check for continuity from harness up to the sensor.

I was told that not having the o2 working properly messes up your plugs and eventually coil packs.

Engine diagnostic says bank sensor one which means the one closest to the engine. I realised this problem after mixing fuel at the pump as there was no unleaded so i filled up with super. Month after stress.

i am trying to eliminate as i go along.

This particular problem can be a nightmare!
-The scan tool in many instances will advise that oxygen sensor is bad and a change out req'd and even if this is done the check light says on and the same error code remains.
What this normally means is that their may be collateral failure in the system which needs to be traced, rectified and the embedded error code cleared.
Why this happens could be as a result of many different things eg vehicle operated too long with bad sensor and coil pack fails etc.
We have actually found occasions when a oxygen sensor fail code came up but the problem wasn't the sensor at all.
My personal belief is that the generic scan tools don't necessarily provide the level of accuracy as the manufacturers diagnostic equipment and requires the user to eliminate all else before sending you off to purchase a sensor.
What all this means is that the repairer must have the kind of experience req'd to properly trouble shoot this situation further within the shortest timeframe after the check light is observed take the vehicle to the shop.
Last but not least, as far as, possible change electronic parts with manufacture spec.
Everything I have said here is not new,but we almost always fail to comply and unfortunately end up spending more than we should and shortening the life of our auto.
The good news is, the problem here is absolutely fixable.
People who may need further help on the way forward can message me.

All very true toyolink. I am paying the price for not going to a professional in the first place. I am now waiting for payday again since i spent most of my last pay going to the "crackshot specialist". My poor corolla is down. I will go to the place you recommended as soon as my finance is not so fine.

BTW. I put the car up on jack stands and lay below out of mere frustration. saw something looking like burn marks on the wires. Turns out my dog likes to chew O2 sensor wires. GO FIGURE!

slashcustoms, only just saw your post and jeeze the dog chewing the line is one of the first things we look for.
I am almost sure now that this is the root cause of your problem, further we have seen this on many occasions.
The customer almost always is not aware that the dog is the culprit.
Really good repairers check first before instructing you to buy.

also to note the map sensor connected to the top of air box also malfunctions especially if using that K&N oil spray on filter as it fouls the resistor on this sensor!! This leads to the O2 sensor showing up as the error when it really isn't!!!

and you know the drill if fuel pressure is inadequate>>>>> fuel pump or filter(in tank)!!!

last resort if all else is tried catalytic converter may be plugged leading to O2 sensors showing up as faulty!!!
