This particular problem can be a nightmare!
-The scan tool in many instances will advise that oxygen sensor is bad and a change out req'd and even if this is done the check light says on and the same error code remains.
What this normally means is that their may be collateral failure in the system which needs to be traced, rectified and the embedded error code cleared.
Why this happens could be as a result of many different things eg vehicle operated too long with bad sensor and coil pack fails etc.
We have actually found occasions when a oxygen sensor fail code came up but the problem wasn't the sensor at all.
My personal belief is that the generic scan tools don't necessarily provide the level of accuracy as the manufacturers diagnostic equipment and requires the user to eliminate all else before sending you off to purchase a sensor.
What all this means is that the repairer must have the kind of experience req'd to properly trouble shoot this situation further within the shortest timeframe after the check light is observed take the vehicle to the shop.
Last but not least, as far as, possible change electronic parts with manufacture spec.
Everything I have said here is not new,but we almost always fail to comply and unfortunately end up spending more than we should and shortening the life of our auto.
The good news is, the problem here is absolutely fixable.
