Toyota Altis assumed overheat

Hey Tuners....On Saturday on my way to Port-of-Spain my Toyota Altis losed power and began giving out more than usual exhaust so I pulled aside and checked the bonnet to see what would have caused it. Upon checking I realized that the radiator cap was missing (God knows how come). The reservoir was dry so I put in coolant and some water into the radiator but it regurgitated some. I realized that no matter how much water or coolant I put in it would not full the radiator so I suspected that it may have been going inside the engine. I checked the dip stick and I was right it showed that the liquid oil or oil mixture was increasing and it also had a greyish look to it.
I spoke to two mechanics and they both advised that I change the whole engine which is estimated to be about 16k or use a 1.8 substitute for about 8.5k. I find that it is wayyyy too much so I am wondering if there may be an option. They say they wouldn't recommend shaving the head etc because the engine will be short-lived but sometimes I do not even trust mechanics because they look to exploit their clients in an attempt to maximize their earnings.

Please advise.

Thanks
