Tyres for Hilux - highway or all terrain

Postby francis1979 » March 15th, 2019, 7:19 pm

Looking for some feedback

I have a Hilux with factory tyres - Bridgestone Highway
However I find that I find that there is excessive skidding/ slipping when the road is slightly wet

Anyone had similar problems?
Did all terrain fix the problem - what brands?

Btw you don’t need all terrain to drive on road highway etc
You only need to swap out the rear
I swapped out the rear on mine and eventually used them on the front later one
With the nonbridgestone on the back

H/T gives better fuel mileage
A/T is a better all rounder and some brands perform better with grip than some H/T

All terrain one time. I recommend the 771 maxxis and the saulin teramax. The Firestone is a good option also.

Second set of Bridgestone 265 65 17 684 II on the Hilux. Use Bridgestone on the Ford and Frontier years ago. EXCELLENT grip on dry, 50k mileage and more, excellent for road Hazards. FAILURE on wet roads, absolute FAILURE.

Anyone knows who has the Firestone in 17''?
All merchants I checked got them only in 16".

I don't trust nor like any Bridgestone tyre.

I'm running Michellin that I bought two years ago at a buy three get one free at Quickservice. Really good A/T tyres and for the price I paid, well worth it when comparing to the others that were available. It's the LTX Force, made for the South American market.

Avoid the Dueler 840... Those have the worst grip I've ever experienced from a well known manufacturer.
The 684 II are better but not by much.

All terrains don't necessarily give you more grip on a paved surface but they will ride rougher as most are rated LT to carry extra load; so the sidewalls are stiffer.

I am still running on my 840s. I know the inherent risks involved but the tyres still have life in them.

I don't fully utilize the features in an AT Tyre but I do for an HT Tyre

Maxxis(ht750/ht770), Michelin cross terrain HT, and Kumho road venture get my not of approval.

Used the Continental Cross Conti Eco Plus 285/60/17 . Got over 75,000 Km highway in 2.5 years with 40 % left when I sold it. Very quiet and comfortable and good wet grip. These tires have a 740 Tread-ware. These were priced at $1600 per tire from M. Ramrattan Tyres Marabella.

Prior to these I have used Kumho Road Venture HT 275/60/17 Tires not bad but the ride was nosier and lasted just 65,000 km.
They were good on dry and wet and reasonable priced $1200 per tire from Mileage Mack. Used these for 2 rotations.

The worst tires used ever was the original tires the Hilux came with the Bridgestone Dueler 684 II 265/65/17. Fishtail was frequent. Although it was quiet i only kept it for 30,000 km. Too dangerous on wet.

Currently using Yokahama Geolander G94 A/T . It came with this Hilux. Only 2,500 Km added on this thus far. Not bad as the rainy season just begun. Will update again in a few months time.

Where do you get rub? I assume at the rear most point of the front tyre when steering and articulating? If so, there is a bit of room for fire wall massaging.

These are great IMHO, one of the deepest treads i believe also . Way less noise that kumho and last longer than Toyo A/T. I usually run 30psi for a decent ride. No issues in the wet with on hilux 265/70/15 and no complaints on fortuner 265/65/17. Was trying to get size for Rav4 but couldn't. Will buy again.
