Toyota hilux diesel gauge problem

Postby tuner361 » May 1st, 2020, 3:27 pm

Looking for some help solving a problem with my fuel gauge not reading properly. When the tank is full the gauge reads properly but when the tank in less than half the gauge does not go below 1/2 tank.

Now the sending unit was changed by the previous owner for what exactly was the problem i am not aware.

According to google it can be the fuel sending unit in the tank OR the instrument panel.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My troubleshooting for the more technical folks.
The tank was removed.
I took out the sending unit and check the resistance which gave readings of 110 ohms at empty and 4 ohms at full.
When the unit was connected back to the vehicle but outside the tank I manually moved the float to full and empty position this the gauge reacted the same with the problem.
Now removing the sending unit form the vehicle again i now took some resistors and connected it to the two wires for the sending unit, noting the changes on the fuel gauge. At approximately 150 ohms the fuel gauge reads almost empty which leads me to believe that the wrong sending unit was installed.

Maybe i need a sending unit with a value of 160 ohms to 4 ohms.

Does anyone has any experience with this?

What year is the van?

2012 and up have and issue with the instrument panels themselves

In the process of diagnosing, they (mechanics) advise to change the sender in the tank.

But its actually an electrical issue with something in the fuel guage in the panel.

Yep, it is the gauge cluster.

Toyota will order one for at a cost of an arm and a leg, about 12K.

I met with the guy today he removed the panel and changed some parts behind it, now it seems to be working, i have to still monitor all the way down to empty to ensure it reading accurately.

Before any thing was done the gauge read about half which was incorrect.
The tank was approximately quarter I know this because when I removed the tank this was the case.
After the fix the reading on the gauge was at quarter.
I then filled $40.00 diesel and the gauge and range indicated the increase "so props"
Hopefully everything of all good, but as i said i still have to monitor the tank all the way down to empty to 100% be certain its working.

His contact is 7261773 forgot his name though.

So...update

I had my instrument panel repaired by MicroSMD lab from the forums here.

I must say, the quality of the work was outstanding.

I was able to run my tank below last ¼ which i could never do before.
I pushed it all the way to the last ⅛, then i reached a gas station. So i ended filling up.

I am confident that the repair worked and will recommend Ainsley @ microsmd lab for this repair job.

Leave a contact number and a costs for the repair.

My hilux is going in 6years and I suspect that I may need this repair.

Your way sounding much better and cost effective than buying a new unit!

Cost was 600
It can vary depending on how many resistors need to be resoldered and if any need to be replaced. So he will advise you accordingly.

His contact is 681-6610
His name is ainsley

He advertises on the forums here as MicroSMD Lab.
