Why?
Well I once had transmission problems, over three years ago. I had the same options as you. I had mine rebuilt by Jenton Transmission Specialist. I have never had transmission problems up until this day.
With the rebuild, new parts are being used. Bearings, solenoids, clutches and filter. In most cases you also get a warranty, and you have the ease of mind in knowing that if it fails, it will be fixed and also that you have a basically new transmission. With a foreign used one, as you said, you will not know the condition of it.
Converting to a gearbox is nice but without the manual ECU which is hard to get, a few very minor modifications have to be done. This conversion may well end up more than rebuilding the CVT.
