2010 Subaru Impreza

Postby natsudragneel » March 9th, 2021, 8:35 pm

Does anyone know if the both radiator fans are supposed to turn on at the same time with the ac on?
Changed the radiator today and after mounting back up realised only 1 fan turns on even when the ac is on.
Unsure if at a higher temperature the other fan turns on or is it malfunctioning hence the blown radiator.
Can someone assist? It's an El15 engine.

2 wire or 4 wire?

Swap the harness and see if the next fan powers on.

You can spin it first and see if it keeps spinning.

Could just be a lil servicing it need. Or just replace it if you not comfortable opening a motor

Not certain.. But they both have seperate jacks and are connected seperately. One turns on with the ac on immediately or off after it runs a couple of mins and the other didn't turn on while monitoring.

They run along the shroud if I'm not mistaken. You can unhook them for length. Or just take out the shroud.

Not sure if the assembly like the 04 model in the wrx but the whole assembly comes out complete with radiator. You just have to unjack them and disconnect the two radiator hoses. Loosen the bolts and it lifts out as one.

See if the motors have two wire, three or four. I have the wiring diagram for the four but you may have to use a dmm to figure out the tree since I can't recall off the top of my head. Just put 12v dc to the wires and see it it spins.

If you brave enough you can open the motor and just wash it out with some contact cleaner. Inspect the brushes while you at it. Four wire is usually the same as nissan almera and some tiida.

The motor has some metal tabs around it you have to pry open with a flat head screwdriver. Be sure to seal it back with a bit of gasket maker before closing up. Slip jaw pliers or needle nose usually bend the tabs back into place. It's usually best to make a mark on the side before sperating them so the halves line back up. But you can get away without doing such.

Fhi usually has a smart design made by smart people for smart owners.

Older models the two fans come on at rest. The ecu can cycle one or both at various speeds and temperature for air flow across the condenser coils and radiator.

I am not sure of later models have a pressure sensor to turn on the second as it rises and you need more cooking.

Monitoring for overheating or high levels in the coolant overflow tank are tell tails or rising temp gauge in traffic or at low speeds with high ambient temps for fan malfunction. Can do a scan if you have an obd2 and see if there are any errors. Subaru usually throws a code long before any damage is done.

Get it sorted out before a catastrophic overheat and you have to shave your heads and change head gasket.

I have gotten away with refilling the cooling system with the car switched off and jacking up the front so the filling point is the highest and squeezing the top radiator hose to push out air instead of traditional methods with the funnel and wait time for it to heat up and bubble out the air. Air locked coolant pump can defeat that method easy. The flat engine design is slightly different for coolant filling opposed to inline.

Make sure and use a good oil based coolant like valvoline zerex or honda and your car will love you. Treat your scooby right and it will treat you right.

Oh, and if you do start to overheat, pull over and let it cool off on its own. Do not throw cold water in it or release the pressure via removing the rad cap or turbo reservoir cap and allow it to flash into steam. Sure headgasket and / or head job there.

If it did overheat monitor the radiator for oil and oil for coolant. The oil will look milky.
