2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara Abs and Transmission light

Postby makiylahb » June 9th, 2019, 8:58 pm

While driving the transmission light comes on

Then all guages went to zero, temperature and gas gauge went to cold and E as if the vehicle was turned off and the abs and brake light came on.

What's happening to my GV?

On the surface, it sounds like a ground-fault on the instrument panel power circuit.

This would be good if thats just the case ... I did a scan and I am getting body controle module as an error. What is that?

The BCM provides control logic for many vehicle body systems like headlamp warning, IP indication lights, dome light dimming, etc.

You could have a ground fault on a circuit to the IP, a bad connection between the IP and BCM, a blown fuse or faulty B+ connection, a failed BCM, etc.

Check the connectors to the BCM first, especially if you have been working on the IP or radio wire harnesses.

The body control module (BCM) is behind the radio, on the instrument panel (IP) structure.Image

I couldn't say but I could guess in the $1000 range.

I would expect that the failure is a bad wire terminal, a broken wire, a loose connector, etc. The parts cost is likely small but in my experience they are unfortunately the most difficult failures to identify.

I still cannot locate a bcm locally. Do you think an electrician can repair mine?

An electronics shop would need to test it and repair and bad components or circuits. It may be easier to ship one in if you can't find one in a scrap yard.

Never expected this to be so complicated. I am getting them in the bamboo but they are saying that it must have the same code as mine

I am not sure what the sellers in the Bamboo are referring to when they say "code"...

The body control module usually doesn't change much with respect to the physical internal components but the software may change. The software change will usually cause the part number to be incremented (bumped to the next number).

The safest bet is that you buy the same part number. But you can do your online research and find out which part numbers are interchangeable.

SO I found the BCM, and found one with the same number and changed it, however the problem still persists... what next could it be?

Same issue here, was told there is a guy in Lopinot who can fix it. Took mine to Lifestyle and they said they would have to change the panel but the panel does not have a part number.

They said they will try to find the part (Not sure how they will do that without a part number) and would call me back. That was two weeks ago!

In my research on the internet I did see a part number under the panel once it's removed. This issue appears common with the Grand Vitara post 150K Km's.

To the posters having the issue, do you lose power when the panel goes out? This happens in my case.

Know this is an old post but was finally able to resolve this issue last week.

Saw a poster on www.suzuki-forums.com show how he resolved it with step by step instructions.

Basically the issues occurs because of loose or "cold" soldering joints on the circuit board of the instrument cluster.

To resolve, your technician will have to remove and open the panel completely (About 3 separate parts) to get to the circuit board.

Once it is exposed (Circuit board) the loose or cold joints are relatively easy to spot.

I'm from the East so got it sorted by an Auto Electrician named Johnny in Lopinot (787-2243) for a reasonable price.

The issue has not reoccurred since then :)

Take note of the position of the needles for all the gauges as follows:

The Speedometer rests at Zero.

The Tachometer also rests at Zero.

However, the fuel gauge rests at the middle of the "E" (Empty mark) and the Temperature Gauge rests at the middle of the "C" (Cold mark)

Take extra care in removing the needles as they are plastic and fairly easy to break.

Hope this helps anyone as it was a real problem for me for quite some time.
