Postby heshere2001 » July 8th, 2007, 7:07 pm

Looking to buy a Local Used Passat/ A4. I wanna know what year model is a good buy. I also read some reports about Passat engines and VW's in general.....Are they easily prone to engine sludge.?

Engine sludge is a thick, dark substance that can build up and clog the oil passages within an engine.

Normal engine combustion creates gases, water vapor, fuel fragments and acids inside the engine.

These by–products of combustion are held in suspension in the motor oil. If the oil is changed at regular intervals, most of the sludge particles are drained away with the used oil. However, if the oil is not changed regularly or the engine undergoes severe conditions, over time these by–products begin to group together to form sludge.

WHAT CAUSES SLUDGE?

1. Extending drain intervals beyond the engine manufacturer's recommendation
1. Many OEMs are now recommending longer drain intervals, but only under normal driving conditions.
2. Most consumers drive under severe driving conditions under which more contaminants are produced.
Valve Deck Sludge
2. Driving Styles
1. Stop and go traffic
2. Excessive idling
3. Short trips
3. Environment
1. Many of these factors can be exaggerated by cold and/or humid climates/
environments like Seattle.
4. High-Performance Engines
1. The high performance engines of today's new cars can put drivers at an even greater risk for sludge build-up.
2. Sludge can happen to any vehicle, regardless of the car's age or mileage.

Change oil at manufacture inetervals (OEL, INSP1, INSP2) and you will be fine.
My pick of engine for 3B/8C/E models the 1.8T. Very frugal and flexable for its size.
Passats and Audi suffer from front suspension components failing due to their many ball jointed parts. This is one downside. Electric door regulators also break the plastic clip that holds the window.
These problems I have seen tend to be on cars with 80K miles driven on much smoother surfaces than that seen in sweet TNT. So failure in this area may be faster.
Your timing belt will need renewing every 60K miles. This job involves removing the front of the car and replacing all drive belts as well.
Apart from these qurks the car can be just as reliable as any Jap box that populates the roads.

Thanks for the info guys. Soo basically any model under 80,000 km is good?
I'm really interested in Euro vehicles now just for the ride comfort and all round better vehicle than the Japs.
