Voters head to polls for UK general election
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4ngpn4gljgo

Millions of voters are casting their ballots in the UK's first July general election since 1945.

Polling stations, set up in buildings like local schools and community halls, are open between 07:00 and 22:00 BST on Thursday.
Around 46 million voters are eligible to elect 650 members of Parliament to the House of Commons.

The results for each area, or constituency, will be declared through the night and into Friday morning.

Political parties are looking to win more than half the seats, 326, in order to form a majority government.

I attended an event in London earlier this month and Sadiq Khan as well a Labour Party Shadow Minister spoke on different days.
Realized Politicians are the same ilk everywhere and these fellas came and campaigned at something they should have just said Hai/bai, thanks for coming.

Labour Party wins enough seats to form majority government

Latest results: As of 5 a.m. GMT Friday, the Labour Party had won 326 of the 650 seats in the UK parliament, securing a majority.

Sunak concedes: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the British people have “delivered a sobering verdict,” and conceded that the Labour Party has won the election.

Notable wins: Nigel Farage, the leader of the hard-right Reform UK party, won a seat after seven failed election attempts. Jeremy Corbyn, who led the Labour Party into the general elections of 2017 and 2019, has held onto his seat in north London — but this time as an independent.

“We will put country first, party second,” Starmer says

No sticking. Official duties start already.

Labour leader Keir Starmer becomes prime minister after meeting the King at Buckingham Palace

Starmer is heading to Downing Street to address the nation

Earlier, Rishi Sunak resigned as prime minister after meeting the monarch

GB was offered a choice to dispatch a deeply unpopular government. Unfortunately, we don't have any sort of alternative to what obtains now.

How many Prime Ministers has there been since the one that was the last to be photographed with the Queen? That title seems like a revolving door.

Proof once again that the Westminster system is no better and maybe even worse at democracy than the US electoral college.

I disagree. I think the first past the post allows for better geographic distribution of representation. Otherwise with the example of the UK, one party can just say we will benefit London and South England and they will get 50% +1 of the vote and ignore everyone else. FPTP means you have to get widespread support in considerable numbers to lead and not just a specific demographic.

FPTP doesn't solve the geographic distribution problem though especially in the British context

It's an ongoing debate no need to sort it out here. Time will tell if they last longer than Liz Truss.

I guess when Kamla wins in 2025 she will plagiarise his victory speech too

One interesting fact on Starmer....he was the attorney for the defendant in Matthews vs State, the Privy Council ruling which affirmed TT's right to use the death penalty.

In true Westminster tradition, Sunak handed in his resignation as both PM and leader of the party. There are serial losers in Trinidad who cling to power, propped up by sycophants and supported by the foolish.

Sad that Manning set this trend first and did not resign when he lost
