Reel Fanatic’s Jovan Jango caught an 825-lb blue marlin on the final day of the T&T Game Fishing Association’s International 2009 Marlin Madness tournament at Pigeon Point Heritage Park, Tobago, on Saturday. The T&TGFA allowed 130-lb rod and reel tackle for the first time in its 29-year history of hosting this tournament in order to give anglers a better chance at landing a 1,000-lb blue marlin.
If anyone was successful in doing so, they would have been the recipient of a check worth $1,000,000 from the TTGFA, while if anyone had broken the local record of 890 lbs, held by 15-year-old Sean Mendonca, they would have received $60,000. In all, 29 boats with 143 anglers from the US, UK, Barbados, Martinique, Grenada, Venezuela and T&T competed for the big prize money, but it was Jovan who came the closest as he fought the monster fish on the final day for six hours and 15 minutes. His team placed first overall as a result of his big catch. Second place went to Viking 4 followed by Fun Now, Grand Slam and Barbie Doll 2.
In all, 17 blue marlins and seven sailfish were released during the tournament. Jovan also won Best Angler with the Best Female Angler prize going to Teressa Jack and Best Junior Angler was Oma Davis, all of Viking 4. TTGFA president Chris Mouttet thanked the platinum sponsors, the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Tobago House of Assembly and Carib for their tremendous support in making the tournament one of the best ever.
He also promised that the new venue of Pigeon Point Heritage Park will be the home of many more big catches. He said, “Last year, Tobago was put on the world map with Sean Mendonca’s junior world record 890-lb blue marlin. We will remain on the world’s fishing map for 2009 as a result of Jango’s 825-lb catch and who knows what surprise catches are in store for us in 2010."
