825-lb blue marlin caught in Tobago tournament

Postby ray d saint » May 6th, 2009, 7:02 am

http://guardian.co.tt/sports/other-spor ... tournament

Reel Fanatic’s Jovan Jango caught an 825-lb blue marlin on the final day of the T&T Game Fishing Association’s International 2009 Marlin Madness tournament at Pigeon Point Heritage Park, Tobago, on Saturday. The T&TGFA allowed 130-lb rod and reel tackle for the first time in its 29-year history of hosting this tournament in order to give anglers a better chance at landing a 1,000-lb blue marlin.

If anyone was successful in doing so, they would have been the recipient of a check worth $1,000,000 from the TTGFA, while if anyone had broken the local record of 890 lbs, held by 15-year-old Sean Mendonca, they would have received $60,000. In all, 29 boats with 143 anglers from the US, UK, Barbados, Martinique, Grenada, Venezuela and T&T competed for the big prize money, but it was Jovan who came the closest as he fought the monster fish on the final day for six hours and 15 minutes. His team placed first overall as a result of his big catch. Second place went to Viking 4 followed by Fun Now, Grand Slam and Barbie Doll 2.

In all, 17 blue marlins and seven sailfish were released during the tournament. Jovan also won Best Angler with the Best Female Angler prize going to Teressa Jack and Best Junior Angler was Oma Davis, all of Viking 4. TTGFA president Chris Mouttet thanked the platinum sponsors, the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Tobago House of Assembly and Carib for their tremendous support in making the tournament one of the best ever.

He also promised that the new venue of Pigeon Point Heritage Park will be the home of many more big catches. He said, “Last year, Tobago was put on the world map with Sean Mendonca’s junior world record 890-lb blue marlin. We will remain on the world’s fishing map for 2009 as a result of Jango’s 825-lb catch and who knows what surprise catches are in store for us in 2010."

lol, but it was closer than anybody else. if you had pull in a 500lb, you wouldn't fret, but not even the record?

and in terms of fish, would 125lbs make that much of a SIZE difference? (i mean the fish not going to be 1m longer or nuttin rite?)

That's so sad.

Of course, by removing the animal from the gene pool these fishermen are going a long way toward ensuring that animals like that die out.

The season runs from october to June....cause the game fishes are migrating south for the rich caribbean waters where food is in abundance....it was confirmed that 1200 pounder marlins are present in the waters at the north-western end of the island, just a couple of miles offshore (between the Sisters Rocks off Bloody Bay and the Giles Islands at the northern end of the island). They can't catch them because their equipment are not capable......"During the peak season around November, they are so plentiful that anglers will be kept busy from dawn until dusk.".......hope they don't empty d sea though

that's why the competition is held once during open season..i guess..fishermen rarely pull these type of catch....

well said

if by some chance they could get around to just weighing the fishes and release them after
then maybe someday it might actually have fish to cross 1000 lbs

They have catch and release Tourneys all the time and only at certain times of the year they are allowed to bring in fish but once it surpasses a STRICT length and are limited in the Number that they catch .

^^They do...it's very strict policies (for the fishes benefit) they are applying when it comes to these tournaments....they do have worldwide programmes that monitor the species and its "gene pool"

all of a sudden we have fish activists..how would we have marlin to eat in d restaurant...

These touneys are strictly controlled for the protection of the fish and it's not like they happen every week, jeeeezzz.

Known for putting up a tremendous fight when hooked, these rare marine monsters are the holy grail for sport fishers. Although not currently endangered, conservationists worry that they are being unsustainably fished, particularly in the Atlantic.

Actually. maybe if you'd gotten more hugs and attention as a child you would understand the senselessness in killing creatures like that.
