Are you that CO2 is the correct gas to be used with those machines, or is it a bush substitute?

It is fine for carbon and mild steel, as far as I know, I believe the hardcore stainless steel and aluminum men would need their argon. Plenty muffler shops use CO2 right thru.
I've dragged out an old canadian welding textbook I have here, which says that CO2 is fine for all carbon and low alloy (ferrous) steels, with the advantage of high penetration, high welding speed, and low cost, the disadvantage being more surface spatter and a rougher bead appearance.
