not with the late model 3GS phones which are the ones that shipped after firmware 3.1.2 was released. only a tethered jailbreak is possible atm

only way is to buy an iphone with baseband 04.26 or one that was shipped b4 the 3.1.2 firmware

well ur not going to get any new 3GS phones without having to use the tethered jailbreak.

if u want a 3GS without that, then just ask what baseband the phone has.

if its 04.26 then u good to go

NOT TRUE

I have an iPhone 3GS with 3.1.2 and tethered jailbreak and I switch off my phone all the time.

you cannot hard reset your phone with the tethered jailbreak. If you do you simply run the unlock again which takes lass than 2 mins. I have never had to do this since I've had my 3GS since last year.

You CAN switch of the the phone without losing the unlock and jailbreak.

The Nexxus has been shown to be slower than the iPhone, slower less accurate touchscreen and you CANNOT beat the 3GS for the amount of apps for it.

i never said switching off the phone makes u lose ur jailbreak and unlock.

i said if u switch it off u have to connect it to the computer and run the jailbreak program again to complete the boot process...

that is not true either.

switching off the phone and hard rebooting the phone is two different things

you can switch off / power off the phone and switch it back on without connection to a PC - I just did it again on my 3GS.

holding down the home and sleep/wake keys for a few seconds to hard reboot / reset the phone is where you will need connection to a PC.

only the late model 3GS phones with the new bootroms are affected in this way...

If your ipt2/3GS/ipt3 is rebooting into recovery after running blackra1n, this isn't a bug. It's a feature. You need to run blackra1n every time to boot it. This 'feature', called tethered jailbreak, is enabled by upgrades Apple made to the bootrom and the fact ipt3 uses nand flash.

like i said, it's only the late model 3GS phones with the new bootroms that are affected by the tethered jailbreak

Simple thing... just ask the guy who you are getting the 3GS from.. what is the model number?

If the model number of it DOES NOT begin with MC... your in for an untethered jailbreak ;)

Once it is MC... you will have to run blacksn0w to reboot your iDevice. Because you will have a tethered jailbreak.

I had to jailbreak an iTouch with a model number of MC... As i installed SBSettings and rebooted, had to run ra1n on it to boot it back. Of course, you dont lose ANY data, but you never know if your out n sh!t happens.

My suggestion, look for one with a model number like MB..... and you'll be safe (If your even lucky to find one with a 04.26.08 Baseband). If your not tech savvy, get a Nexus One. TBH, its still developing but A LOT of productivity apps are out on Android, and, they gots Goggles
AND you just stick in your SIM card and your on!

^ lol @ if you're not tech savvy

honestly I havent had to reboot my phone at all - so its no big deal with the tethered jailbreak.

If I need to reset anything a power off / on works fine.
The 3GS is even more rock solid and hasn't crashed under heavy pressure like the lower powered 2G and 3G

fixed

honestly i cant do without the apps that i use right now. but the iphone no longer cuts it as a smartphone that can do everything.

so as i'm in the market for a new ipod, i'll just wait for the new ipod touch and use that for the oh so glorious and unbeatable app store.

and btw, if u want to root ur nexus one and install custom roms, u need to be tech savvy to do that too

oh lawrd mitch. You will make Duane blow a gasket, please! :poke:
and true about the rooted nexus, but as a basic iPhone user nowadays, you need to know what is Cydia and Jailbreak and i'd even say, how to change your root password. That's basic knowledge. You dont have to i must say, but you'd be a fool not to.

But sadly, if it weren't for beyouriphone repo, i would need to pay for such basic things :( But come to think of it, what i use my iDevice for, besides the apps, the music and video player, I dont think there is Air Video/Orb yet for Android even, not even sure about Logmein (again thanks Mutt) and i need those apps and not that im a 100% fanboy but, nothing(phonewise) beats iPhone audio playback.

(i getting a bit overwhelming now :( )
