274 HP Hyundai....

Postby roctt » March 31st, 2010, 2:17 pm

Just unveiled at the New York Auto Show, the new 2011 Sonata 2.0T is the first Hyundai to get turbocharging and direct-injection. As the name suggests, the engine is a small 2.0-liter 4-cylinder and when combined with a twin-scroll turbocharger and Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) technology it makes a class-leading 274-hp and gets 34-mpg on the highway. City fuel economy is set at 22-mpg. As for the turbocharged engine’s torque number, it is equally impressive, rated at 269 ft-lbs from just 1800 rpm to 4500 rpm. Better yet, it does all this on regular fuel.

Been tellin men this about hyundai for years now. i understand though how a bad image can be hard to shake off. The 2010 sonata and tuscon are equally impressive.

Its now the worlds 3rd largest automaker.

max torque 269ft/lb @ 1800 rpm flat to 4500 rpm.........
where the lag here ???
these figs compare to a properly tuned oem sr20det on pump fuel....don't forget : engine pulling from 1200 rpm to max torque @ 1800 rpm.......all within 'normal' driving range (that's the key in the comparison)..... :!: :!: :!:

im sure its an updated version of the 2.0T found in the base Genesis Coupe. DI made a big difference when coupled with a turbo but Mazda beat them to it a few years now with the 2.3 DI Turbo engine. Nevertheless this Hyundai engine again is probably co-engineered with Chrysler and Mitsubishi. The Caliber SRT4 got the 2.4Turbo and the EVO X got the 2.0 Turbo. Hyundai's own is probably a quasi 4B11. But for a Sonata mid-size FWD car, it seems they are the first to put 4-cylinder turbos with DI for the USDM market especially since they staying away from making V6 engines.

IMHO, a high compression Four Cam 24V or even a 30V V6 with DI and VVT (both on the intake and exhaust) is better to have over a turbo 4-cylinder performance wise and fuel economy wise. I mean the big and heavy Ford Taurus SHO with the 3.5 DOHC 24V Ecoboost V6 is still impressive.

1996-2003 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4

2.5 DOHC 24V V6 Turbo AWD (276HP, 271 ft-lbs of torque)
5-speed manual/5-speed automatic
curb weight: 3400lbs
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2005-2007 Mazdaspeed 6 aka Mazda 6 MPS

2.3 DOHC 16V DISI SV-T Turbo AWD (274HP, 280 ft-lbs of torque)
6-speed manual
curb weight: 3589lbs

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2008-present Mazda 6

3.7 DOHC 24V SV-T V6 (272HP, 269 ft-lbs of torque)

2010 Volkswagen Passat R36 VR6
