Update 3: John Gruber's just weighed in with some more tidbits, in his characteristically polite way. Gruber says the next model will have an A4-class SoC, a 960 x 640 display, a front-facing camera, and that iPhone OS 4.0 will enable third-party multitasking. A pretty safe set of predictions, in all, but Gruber's done pretty well in the past, so we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm still sticking to my 3GS.

how long now we hearing bout front facing camera and multitasking?

seems like every Apple press event bout the iphone since the 1st gen, there's always been rumors of software updates to enable multitasking or new phones with front facing camera...

after all the ipad rumors and the mega-disappointment that was the actual ipad, i think i'll keep my hopes low this time

after my experience today with a 2G and reading up all the sheit that happens with 2G's i am no longer going to even bother with it. I just went to hell and currently stuck there with this sheit. Yes btw, wifi signal is great in hell. 3/3 bars.

Anyway, can anyone help? i updated and its unlocked and jailbroken @ 3.1.2 but the wifi doesnt stay connected. If it does, i have to leave it sleeping for half hour to get 30secs of usage.

I tried reseting network, resetting all, hell, even erase all data. I tried pwnagetool, then geohot and now redsnow 0.92 and still. Everything is good except the wifi. :(

Trying out Cyder, which is taking a year, but some/little progress.

hi you could try putting the phone in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for a while...bout 30 mins. i can confirm this as i repaired a 2g wifi problem two days ago doing this. if the 30 mins does not work there are people that claim they did it for about 5 hrs but i'm unsure about that one.

Blackra1n Fix for iTunes 9.1 with BlackBreeze

Image

iTunes 9.1, which was released a few hours ago caused syncing issues for many users (specially on Windows), who were jailbroken on iPhone 3.1.2 (tethered) using blackra1n. But now thanks to ih8sn0w, this issue can now be fixed by using BlackBreeze.

To fix blackra1n RC3, simply start BlackBreeze and select blackra1n RC3. Now select the directory where you want to save the fixed blackra1n RC3 executable file. You’ll now notice that a new file by the name of blackra1n-fixed.exe would have been created in the directory where you chose to save it.

Now start this fixed version of blackra1n RC3 and use this to start your device (tethered). Once done, you’ll now be able to sync your iPhone (firmware 3.1.2) safely with iTunes 9.1.

The upcoming 4.0 reference release of Apple's iPhone OS will deliver new support for running multiple concurrent third party apps, and allow users to switch between them using a windows management mechanism similar to one made popular on the company's Mac OS X operating system.

The technology, detailed by people familiar with Apple's plans for the new firmware, will finally allow users to launch multiple apps in the background and quickly switch between them, as AppleInsider exclusively reported earlier this month. Currently, a running app must be quit when the user returns to the Home screen.

Apple initially avoided an app model supporting multiple apps running at once to help preserve battery life and simplify the user experience. Other platforms that do support the launching of multiple apps, including Android and Windows Mobile, require users to manually manage system resources and kill off performance robbing background tasks.

Today's iPhone 3.x firmware is a fully preemptive multitasking operating system, but it artificially restricts apps (other than specific ones bundled with the system by Apple) from running in the background.

Iconic Expose

Those familiar with the design of iPhone 4.0 said that the user interface will resemble Apple's desktop Expose feature, in that a key combination -- reportedly hitting the Home button twice -- will trigger an expose-like interface that brings up a series of icons representing the currently running apps, allowing users to quickly select the one they want to switch to directly. When a selection is made, the iPhone OS zooms out of the Expose task manager and transitions to that app.

Apple patented the Mac OS X Expose concept in 2005, but the desktop implementation relies upon scaling each application's widows so that they all fit into the screen in a single layer without any overlap.

On the iPhone, scaling down several screen views to fit into the relatively small display would be problematic, and apps never have multiple windows, so the new mechanism currently presents just each app's icon. This renders the feature more similar to the basic Command+Tab app switcher than Expose itself as a desktop feature, but people who've been privy to pre-release builds of the iPhone 4.0 OS say it exhibits several characteristics of the Expose brand.

Image
Much like Orbit

Two other features seen in pre-release builds of iPhone 4.0 are a global mailbox view and the ability to add individual contacts to the iPhone's home screen, such as a button that will call "Mom" or "Dad" directly. Since the software remains under active development, there's always the possibility that either or both of these enhancements could be chopped in the coming months.

Multiple apps without broken security

Controversy over "multitasking" within the iPhone OS has been brewing ever since Apple launched iPhone 2.0 with the ability to run third party software titles. While often reported as being a technical flaw, the iPhone OS really has no problem with multitasking. The system's phone, SMS, email, iPod, voice recorder, Nike+, and certain other bundled apps can continue in the background while the user launches another app.

However, third party titles obtained from the App Store (including apps from Apple, such as Remote or iDisk) can not be launched at the same time. This is currently only possible after jailbreaking the system, where the iPhone OS security model is compromised via an exploit, allowing the user to launch and run multiple apps.

This also opens the door to both malware and widespread piracy, both of which have been contained by the default security system put in place by Apple. At the same time, Apple's signed app model in iTunes with its mandatory certificate security mechanism means that iPhone users will be able to run multiple apps from the App Store without fear that their software will spy on them, pop up ads, or send out spam.

Other platform vendors do not mandate rigid security for their software libraries, with Android permissively allowing users to install apps from any source, something that will likely serve as a welcome mat for malicious hackers once that platform gains enough visibility.

Notifications pay off on the way to multitasking

Rather than immediately jumping to a multitasking environment for the iPhone, Apple introduced a system-wide push notifications service to enable third party apps to appear to respond to outside updates (such as incoming messages or news alerts) even when they were not actually running.

The company has worked to refine this mechanism before moving to a fully multitasking model, which means that existing apps with notification support won't necessarily need to be launched in the background just to continually poll for updates. Additionally, third party apps that are running in the background will be less likely to drain performance and battery compared to other platforms because the notification mechanism is more efficient than having multiple apps each polling a remote server for their own updates.

For example, RIM's BlackBerry OS has long offered multitasking support for apps but the company only recently opened up its push delivery infrastructure to third party developers. As a result, most of the relatively small library of BlackBerry apps are designed to inefficiently poll a server for information rather than avail themselves of the BlackBerry's famous push messaging features.

Google provides no standard mechanism for system-wide push on Android, forcing developers to all roll their own support. Meanwhile, Microsoft is planning to roll the clock back with Windows Phone 7 later this year, erasing its existing multitasking support for third party apps in Windows Mobile to deliver a model patterned after iPhone 2.0.

References to two new iPhones, a new iPod, and the next iPad have reportedly been found in the iPad filesystem.

A BoyGeniusReport source found the following references while digging inside the new device.

As far as iPods go Apple usually refreshes them in September of a given year. If you feel that is too long to wait then you should get the 3rd gen now. Can't remember any rumored features of the 4th gen iPod touch off hand (or if any exist for that matter)

iPad 'Spirit' jailbreak demonstrated by MuscleNerd

You better believe it when notorious iPhone jailbreaker MuscleNerd -- a well-respected member of the iPhone Dev-Team -- declares root access on an iPad. According to this fella's tweets, this new hack is a port of Comex's "Spirit" jailbreak that exploits a bug found on both iPhone OS 3.1.3 and the iPad's 3.2. No downloads are offered right at this moment, but it shouldn't be long before we can throw in all sorts of wild apps and widgets as we wish.

Apple today announced that it sold over 300,000 iPads in the US as of midnight Saturday, April 3. These sales included deliveries of pre-ordered iPads to customers, deliveries to channel partners and sales at Apple Retail Stores. Apple also announced that iPad users downloaded over one million apps from Apple’s App Store and over 250,000 ebooks from its iBookstore during the first day.

“It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world—it’s going to be a game changer,â€

Breaking News

On the heels of the introduction of the iPad, Apple is ready to talk about the next version of iPhone OS.
The company sent media invitations Monday morning to an event where it will reveal iPhone OS 4.0. There were scant details, simply an e-mail with the above image that said, "Get a sneak peek into the future of iPhone OS."
It will take place on the Apple campus at 10 a.m. Thursday. There have been some hints as to what might be in the new software, including perhaps multitasking, which has been rumored to have an Expose-like interface.

He did it to the (at the time brand new iPhone (2G)) & now the iPad suffers the same fate...
I'd like to hope the other 299998 iPads didn't suffer these fates.

------

The iPad is finally out and it is time to revisit some of the speculations that we had reported prior to the launch.

One of the most debated topics was the performance levels of the A4 Soc that powers the iPad. This was significant not just because the chip has been designed in-house by Apple, but also because there are indications that A4's SoC may also power the iPhone in the future.

So what can we make of the A4 processor now that the iPad has reached its users? Folks at AnandTech have carried out an in-depth study comparing iPad's A4 processor against iPhone 3GS' Cortex A8 and Nexus One's Qualcomm QSD8250 chip.

The study looked into two crucial aspects - processor performance while loading several popular websites on these devices and the performance of real world JavaScript on the iPad, iPhone 3GS and Nexus One using the official WebKit SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark test. The results are quite a revelation. While the study indicates a 10% faster webpage loading time on the iPad compared to the Nexus One, the A4 shows a 37.6% better performance over Nexus One's Qualcomm SoC in the JavaScript Benchmark test. The iPhone 3GS was outperformed by the other two devices in both the tests, which is understandable considering that the handset launched much earlier and so uses a marginally outdated technology.

Image

Image

While the conclusions from the study point to a much improved processor performance on the iPad, it however needs to be noted that the next generation Qualcomm chip for devices like the Nexus One is due to be released later this year and is expected to run at 1.3 GHz. For a perspective, the A4 processor operates at 1.0GHz. As the study notes, the next-gen Snapdragon chips "could be enough to either equal or outperform Apple's A4 based on what we've seen here today".

With Android smartphones like HTC EVO 4G expected to be launched in the summer with the 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, we think the combination of iPhone OS 4.0 and Apple A4 in the next generation iPhone might be able to stave off competition from Android phones for most of 2010. However, Android phones with the next generation Qualcomm chip towards the end of the year will probably start giving some serious competition to even the next generation iPhone.

(In case you didn't know this Apple A4 chip is actually made by Samsung)

Just a little side note. Rumors are that Apple may release iPhone OS 3.2 during or after the iPhone OS 4.0 preview on Thursday.

Also, the makers of the #1 free app in the App Store, PixelCUBE Studios are reporting, via their usage stats for their app, The Impossible Test that Apple is testing not 1, not 2, but 3 versions of iPhone OS 4.0 & greater.
Engadget wrote:It's not unusual for Apple (or any major software developer, really) to have different teams working on multiple version milestones at the same time, so we don't doubt that this could be real; then again, this is easy enough to spoof in a world where enterprising devs and fun-loving miscreants are bending iPhones to their every whim with creative hacks and lightning-quick jailbreaks.
