Wow. He really feel we born yesterday. Of course they gonna be releasing murderers. You don't "spend your life in prison" for a small crime.

Years ago, knew a guy who was pardoned, a murderer. Real sad story. My mom was trying to help him, get a job, clothes, food. He used to beg by the church, one of the people the good christians would pay extra security fees to keep outside "their" church.

Eventually, he degraded into drugs and died in a squabble with another " vagrant" by the bus terminal in Sando.

He could never fully adjust.

Sigh...

Oh really?

The former leader of the UNC served time while Kamla and the rest of the supports organised a march around the jail to free him. Carlos John and Brian Kuei Tung were charged and spend some nights.

There are about 4 PP ministers with issues before the courts, with most recently the Tourism Minister being charged for using "annoying" language, you know, the similar charge we would get for using obscene language in public.

2 PNM ministers got accused of bribery, they stepped down and fought their innocence, the accuser admitted he lied and everybody went about their biz. To suggest Jack Warner to do the same is heresy in this country.

I dont mind the pardoning, it has been done before.

There are convicted criminals that have reformed and although they can't demand to be pardoned, there is long procedure to who see which prisoners are pardonable and the decision could be made whether or not to do it.

What I don't like the PR stint that is being made out of it. In the midst of rising crime and lawlessness it doesn't look good. Plus, why 50? Just because it is the 50th anniversary? Suppose only 15 prisoners meet the mark, are they just going to pardon the next best 35?

Prisons inspector supports pardons
By Keino Swamber keino.swamber@trinidadexpress.com

INSPECTOR of Prisons, Daniel Khan, says he agrees with the announcement by Justice Minister Herbert Volney that 50 eligible prisoners are to be pardoned in commemoration of this nation's 50th anniversary of independence.
Volney made the announcement at Thursday's post-Cabinet news conference at the Office of the Prime Minister in St Clair.
He said Government is to recommend to President George Maxwell Richards that he pardon 50 criminals who would become free people.
In a statement yesterday, Khan said he has received reports, during his tenure, recommending the release of some prisoners sometimes on medical grounds, and sometimes on the basis that the prisoner is rehabilitated and no longer poses a threat to society.
"The release of these prisoners would signal to society that even though prisoners may commit serious crimes, they are not dead to the world and even a lost sheep may eventually return to the shepherd," Khan said.
"(Volney's statement) ought to be applauded and is a testament that although our nation's prison system has many flaws, it still can achieve the main purpose of modern sentencing principles which is rehabilitation.
"The current prison rules provide for a mandatory periodic four-year review for prisoners serving long sentences and such reviews are prepared by the Prison Administration. A report is forwarded to the Minister of National Security who, no doubt, forwards it to the Mercy Committee which would then make recommendations to His Excellency the President."
At Thursday's post-Cabinet news conference, Volney was asked whether those prisoners who are to be released had committed murder and other such serious crimes. He said those chosen would be "worthy candidates, people who have spent all their lives in prison. It is on the recommendation of the Commissioner of Prisons, and it would be dealt with by the Mercy Committee, making the recommendation to the President".
Volney gave the assurance that the public's safety would not be jeopardised by releasing a dangerous person.

It would be such a better gesture if they were to just go and shoot 50 random people in the beetham zoo instead............. and just think of how much trinidad would benefit from this.
crime would go down by 50% maybe......................................

crazybaldhead's anecdote has a very relevant concern attached to it, you know. After the PP PR over the matter dies down, what are these reformed, "more than deserving" ex cons being released to? This is less a criminal pardon and more of a vagrant manufacturing programme.
