remember gravel has a smooth surface no pores, and not much surface area, so you may need alot less than you think if you go that route. But gravel more or less limitless so you can always add how much you need lol. When i want gravel, i does go pick up some by small boats, wash and let em sit in the sun, but you look like you need alot more.

You can put it in a sump or separate section for a strict biofilter.

Chk YouTube sir, entire ponds are filtered using pot scrubs and bio balls. Plus trapping debris is fundamentally part of filtering system isn't it. A pig tail bucket, a power head, 3/4" tubing and the media is all you need, if you fancy you can make separation plates with plexiglass.

You can check any stockpile for gravel. Ask for washed gravel and order by size. Most stockpiles will have different sizes available.

They are pretty nasty.. look like an alien preditor in your tank and swims like a snake (with legs). Worst part is they look exactly like a plant and are very hard to see when they are small. I tried feeding a couple to some good sized gold fish I had in a tank but they ended up holding on to one of the fish's sides before scuttling out of sight.

one catfish solves yr probs (biologically)..couple souci, maybe ?
goldfish not aggressive enough...I put 3 tilapia in a 800gal base & within minutes, about 50 dragonfly nymphs crawled up the sides & out of the water (just above the surface) to get away from the fish. You know & cut every one in half as it came up to the edge....enjoyed that exercise :)

Nah, been doing it for years, tinfoils turn 15 and the oscar 17 in 2 months time. Anything organic is killed by nature; sun, wind and rain time, soaking in bleach might be more dangerous if you don't ensure any chlorine residue is taken care of. Those people who run bioballs, also have to take other measures to take care of nitrate issues unless it's a natural pond that has mud which has all the goodies to deal with the nasties. Bioballs and potscrubbers have ok surface area but they lack any anoxic environmental feature to facilitate denitrification. I don't think anyone does water changes to their ponds to lower nitrates, so they use some chemical agent and some sort of algae removal whether it be uv/chemical or diatom filtration. The purpose of mechanical filtration and trapping large debris is to isolate and rremove larger particles before it can decompose into ammonia for your biofilter to handle. I recommended the matrix because in low flow, it can host denitrifiers, facultative aerobes and actually save some cost and headache in the future.

What you need to do is stop overfeeding the fish

these guys (arrowana, arapaima, pacu, etc) put a high bio load on any confined system. U need lots 'more' filtration/recycling capability that usual for regular exotics.
I have 3 arapaima in a 1000 gal base as part of a larger recirculating system & their water always a bit cloudy.

My pig sty, ie. tinfoils and oscar water is always clean and clear, i don't run any chemical or mechanical filtration except the bio scrubbers. Gravel vac, feeding intermittently and water changes is all it takes.
