Black Lab

Postby Gshock » October 17th, 2013, 2:31 pm

hey guys got my new Pure Bred Black Labrador today, and apparently the dog has not been socialized at all, the dog is afraid of everything even the grass in the yard. I don't know if the quarantine period is responsible for this or just the fact that the has been in a kennel for such a long period of time she is 10 months old and as soon as i got her home she wiggled out of her collar and is running loose in the yard and I am unable to catch her she is very skittish and would not come close to me at all.. can anyone help with clues as to how to calm her down and get her back on her leash????

Even these kinda beyotches hard for you to catch OP!!!
The scenario of isolation sounds like the cause of this but she will take some time to acclimatize. Hopefully it not a long term adjustment disorder, have you tried coaxing her with food?great dogs btw!

Patience is your best asset. Coax with food, allow her to come to you. When she get accustomed to you and the environment it will get better.

dog just have a lot of unspent energy....let her be active.....if no food is eaten over a 9day period then u have some worries...but if eating and energetic that's most important...things will fall in place once she gets to know and trust you...important u try and spend time with her

Sounds like the strays I feed. Ppl are usually very cruel to them and hit and chase them so hopefully your dog wasnt beaten or anything and has a reason to fear being around ppl.

Labs are great dogs btw, invest your time in her, sure it will be rewarding.

You'll have to earn her trust.
It's gonna take a few days, be patient.

Every day call her for the food and stay as long as you can. Every day let her come closer and closer then toss the food towards her. Eventually she'll come to your hand to eat and that's it. Instant bond.

first things first you want the dog to feel safe and comfortable around you so don't show any signs of aggression towards her
also don't chase after her if shes running away then obviously she sees you as a threat
just be patient it might take days maybe even weeks (i doubt)
i remember when we took in a stray kitten she always used to run away when you try to pet her but she always comes for food it took probably months before she actually allowed me to pet her and now she comes to me willingly
one thing you can try once the dog see you enough..while shes laying down or relaxed walk up to her slowly once close enough to stick your hand out slowly and touch her head

Oh OP if you aren't looking to get biten I wouldn't startle the dog when she is sleeping to approach to catch her !she will snap out and possibly bite your a$$, so try to keep children away from the dog for the while before we see a new thread if how to treat dog bite. Slow and easy ehh buddy

Thanks guys,, she is coming around.....she is back on the leash...and slowly getting to trust us...we left her home alone last night and when we returned...she just stood and allowed us to walk past her..so I went inside got her collar and walked toward her and she actually stayed and allowed me to pur her collar on...this morning she is wagging her tail...and a lot less skittish...but still cautious.

when petting/approaching don't stand over
dogs can be wary of things approaching from above

Just give her some time. When she realizes you won't cause her any harm, she'll settle down.
