Real Madrid beats the record for unbeaten minutes in Cup history
With 742 minutes without a goal against them, they beat Barcelona's record of 696 and became the first team to get to the tournament finals without a goal against them since 1916.
At Calderón Stadium, Real Madrid achieved the best streak of unbeaten minutes in the entire history of the Copa del Rey. The Whites have now accumulated 742 minutes without a goal against (Castillas’s 720 in the present edition and Diego López’s 22 in the last one) and surpass the 696 minutes accumulated by Barcelona in 1989. On the other hand, Real Madrid is the first team to get to the tournament finals without receiving any goal since 1916. On that occasion Athletic Bilbao did it, but they only played two games before going on to the finals.
What’s more, Real Madrid has achieved another record: they are the first team to get to the Cup finals with their goal at zero since this competition has consisted of more than three rounds. Only Seville in the 2006/2007 season, with one goal against before the finals, comes close to Real Madrid’s excellent record.
