pretty sure I've seen a thread on this before, do a search you'll get more opinions. Maho is close to the airport, and comfortable enough, but nothing spectacular. The island itself is a nice vice island; strip clubs, nude beaches, casinos, plenty places to get drunk, and duty free shopping.

I was there in Nov.2013
Its mostly beaches....no real waterpark for the kids
IMO its more of an adult vacation spot, with bars and clubs...Packed Nightlife

The island has about 20 nude beach...but the main Nude beach usually PAcked out is Oreint Bay were there is a Nude Resort on the beach. Shopping not that great
I Just got back from Margarita....Water parks, Great Shopping, Nice Mall great for kids

I went Margarita a couple of years ago. That was the first n last for me. The trip was nice stayed at Laguna mar hotel however coming back to tdad was the worst. The military ppl in the airport was randomly pulling ppl aside.... Making them go thru some X-ray machine thingy... Digging up in ppl suitcase ... Walking around watching everyone is some drug mule. They damage ppl suitcases..broke the locks to.This guy who had gone to shop they actually took stuff from him. They kept him in a lil room n kept threatening him. Coming back in the plane he told us. Man I was never so happy to be back in sweet tnt

SXM is more for adults, esp the Maho area which is full of restaurants, bars and nightclubs... with kids you're better off going to an all inc in Margarita or Curacao.

I've been there multiple time. Its a beautiful place. I also stayed in Sonesta every time i been there. Its right next to the beach where the airport is. Where people go stand for the plane exhaust to blow you away. When stayed it was an all inclusive package and they have some nice restaurants there. Very nice food. The casino is just across the road and is a great place to hang out. Its alot of night life there on the strip as well. There are roof top beach bars and alot of shopping in Down Town where all the cruise ships docks. Alot of watch and jewellery stores.

Over all a great place

Is the down town shopping area close to the hotel? Is any shopping area close to sonesta hotel?

There isnt much shopping in Maho or around sonesta. You will have to take a taxi to downtown which is about half hr drive then take a taxi back to maho.

S Maarten is beautiful, visited a few years ago, rented a car and drove the entire island in a couple of hours. half the island is french and half is dutch. There are casinos at all of the hotels and everywhere in between. The beaches are fantastic but I can't recall seeing any lifeguards. As the others indicated, the island caters more to adults but you can still have wholesome family fun.

lovely place...I have a Timeshare at Divi Little Resort (closer to town).... its a shoppers paradise for duty free stuff...cant beat their Liquor prices anywhere.

Thais me dey at Divi Little:
Image

Advice...get a rental and go on the french side to eat (if you into french food)...i think apart from eating in Paris... i havent had good french food like on the French side of SXM. Yeah there's some French Beaches but bleh....over-rated. The beach strip by the golf course is nice.... a bit misleading with the coral beach the shore, but once you go more out, the sand is le soft. I stay at Divi Little, so theres a water sport place there that you can rent a jet-ski for about $30US for the hour and you can go towards the Phillipsberg bay area.

If is family stuff.... take a Ferry and go to Anguilla for the day. think it was like $15US return trip. good beaches over there as well.

Check out The restaurant deck near Blue Mall (Maho side, close to Mullet Bay..but after the golf course). Its set against a jetty (like Crews Inn) with a variety of palettes (including LE AWSOME Arabian place that makes some devine wraps.....i talking eat paper ting).
Image

Oh. If you in town, check out the food place called Bare Foot. Awesome local cuisine. Run by a Trini (Johnny Soong's Cousin. Gordon Yee is his name)... real nice spot...and its on the boardwalk, so from there you can shop.
Image

Overall if you going... forget to compare "dollar for dollar" Its an expensive place. But good food. ...ahh..theres french restaurant on the dutch side that makes mean weight gaining pizza.... with goat cheese and nuts and whatnot.
Image

Downtown theres a guy called Anand that makes HUGE roti....
Image
he has two women that want to marry trini's ...so be careful...lol

(all pics are from my 2013 stay...)
