A MAN was sentenced to nine months in jail after he stole a car, worked it as a taxi and was then spotted by the police filling it with gas in Curepe, less than a mile from where he first seized it.
The accused, Clifton Peniston, 28, appeared before Tunapuna Magistrate Siumungal Ramsaran in the Tunapuna Second Court charged with the theft on Monday.
Peniston, who had no lawyer, admitted to stealing the car last Friday when the owner of the car, Hillary Jagdeosingh, picked him up in Arima around 7.45 a.m.
Peniston said he first asked the driver to take him to Port of Spain, but while en-route he asked the driver to take him to Farm Road, St Joseph, where he pulled a gun and asked the driver to give him the vehicle.
Jagdeosingh complied.
Days later, police officers on patrol saw the stolen Nissan bearing the same number plates. At the time, Peniston was seen filling gas and putting oil in the engine. He was immediately detained.
In court, along with admitting that he stole the car, he told the magistrate that it was because he was frustrated after someone stole his Samsung Galaxy tablet, which he used to stream movies and watch DVDs.
He said he was going to use the proceeds of “pulling bull” to purchase himself a new Galaxy tablet.
Magistrate Ramsaran admitted to the accused that when he spoke of tablets he thought that it was the medicinal kind.
The magistrate said he was impressed with the remorsefulness of the man and his honesty.
However, he said that a serious crime had indeed been committed, although both the victim and the accused said that no personal violence was used.
Magistrate Ramsaran said, bearing that in mind, he would impose a custodial sentence, but nothing too harsh as he believed that the man before him really wanted to contribute to society.
“You came clean,” said the magistrate. “Nine months’ hard labour.”
