Local Locomotive

The early discovery of oil and increase production in the beginning of the 20th century.

Diesel power was an obvious alternative on the railways in Trinidad, and it began to eclipse steam locomotion far earlier than the case in Britain.

By 1936 american manufactures like Brockville, Vulcan and others, were making inroads with the sale of the early 20 ton, 125 horse power diesel locomotive for the sugar industry.

One of a kind 125 horse power engine of the locomotive at the NCIC Nagar.

The only remaining locomotive of its kind in T&T

This was a few years prior to the TGR making its first diesel locomotive purchase.

Today one of these Vulcan locomotives has been preserved at the Divali Nagar site in central Trinidad .

The locomotive is a diesel mechanical 0-6-0 25 ton, 145 horse power engine.

When this locomotive first came to Trinidad, it worked in Brechin Castle and its original number was BC907

Local Stick Men

Every year, the National Carnival Commission of Trinidad & Tobago stages the National Stick Fighting Competition in San Fernando, on Trinidad, where competitors from around the island nation come not only to test their skill at the Caribbean martial art kalinda, but to preserve and celebrate what is perhaps the most distinctly Trinidadian tradition.
“Kalinda is an entire culture,” says Rondell Benjamin, a leader in the sport’s revival, on the eve of the competition. “There’s a fashion to it, a martial arts philosophy to it, and we’re in danger of losing it.”

Benjamin and his friend Keegan Taylor have been key players in the effort to promote kalinda since 2010, when they started the Bois Academy of Trinidad & Tobago (bois is French patois for “stick”). Their mission is twofold: To instill national pride in their fellow Trinidadians, and to give young men something positive to focus on in a country that offers little in the way of upward mobility. Says Benjamin, “Kalinda creates a space where young people can transcend their circumstances and just become beautiful.”

This winter, Hemispheres traveled to San Fernando and Port of Spain to photograph the culture of kalinda and learn about its relationship to Carnival.

The History

The origins of kalinda date back to when the first enslaved Africans were brought to the Caribbean: A number of the men from Angola and the Congo came from a stick-fighting warrior tradition. Once on the plantations, their African martial art evolved into a Caribbean performance art, with folk music (a precursor to calypso) and dance mixed into often bloody matches staged for the entertainment of fellow slaves. When the British captured Trinidad (a former French settlement) at the end of the 18th century, the kalinda fighters were marginalized. The new authority saw the stick men as a threat and summarily banned kalinda fighting. When slavery was abolished in the British colonies in 1834, the newly freed people sought to assimilate, and so pushed kalinda culture further underground.

“Kalinda is still stigmatized, for much the same reasons,” says Taylor. “We suffer from cultural amnesia. It’s only by reconnecting to the narrative that formed what this country is today that we can move forward.”

“It’s the dancing, the unique footsteps, and understanding that the people are attracted to the spirituality of the rituals. Kalinda is nothing less than an international art form.”

The Stick

To this day, two sharp kinds of kalinda stick remain outlawed. Fighters have personal preferences, but according to the rules of the sport, all sticks must be approximately one inch in diameter and four feet long. While some fighters carve their own sticks, others commission them from competitors known for their carving skills. King David (opening photo), a renowned kalinda fighter, is sought out for his highly polished, finely weight-balanced sticks. “When the spirit of the stick gets into you, you can’t resist,” he says.

The Match

The kalinda match begins with the rolling of drums and the chants of male singers. Fighters assume defensive crouches, facing each other in the center of the gayelle (ring) with sticks held over their heads. They strike like samurai and defend by holding the sticks firmly with both hands. In the past, the rules of engagement were simple: The victor was the man left standing. Today, while injuries do occur, fighters are guided by a code of fair play and a mutual respect. They can strike only above the waist and are rewarded for intricate maneuvering and finesse as well as for the harmful whacks. The bigger matches, such as those at Carnival, are decided by a multi-judge panel.

The music plays an important role. Fighters quicken their jabs and strikes as the drums gain tempo, and they move into slower, more defensive postures as the rythm ebbs. Chants are in French patois: Mama hele pou mwen is a common refrain, meaning, “My mother is crying for me.”

“Kalinda is an entire culture. There’s a fashion to it, a martial arts philosophy to it, and we’re in danger of losing it.”

The Carnival

Carnival has become the most important venue for reviving kalinda as an integral part of Trinidadian culture. During the past decade, kalinda fights have become a key part of the schedule of the Trinidad & Tobago Carnival, a riotous street festival that occurs on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

The effort to integrate kalinda into Carnival—by far the country’s largest tourist attraction—was championed by Jennifer Cassar. Also known as the Carib Queen, she is the official leader of Trinidad’s First Peoples (which number approximately 7,000) and has been a fan of kalinda since childhood.

“It’s the dancing, the unique footsteps, and understanding that the people in the stands are attracted to the spirituality of the rituals,” she says. “I wanted to put my experience in marketing to work for greater kalinda exposure, and to help the fighters. The bottom line is that people love watching, but there needs to be more money to fuel the art. For me, kalinda is nothing less than an international art form.”

Local Palmiste ~ Caimans

1. All Started by visitors to the Pond

2. A Call was made to remove Caimans from the pond

"I am aware of concerns over today's removal of a few caiman from the pond at the Palmiste Park. This was coordinated by the Forestry Division of the Ministry. The caiman are in the care of recognized experts. There were concerns over increased aggression by the caiman in the pond, in a Park that is essentially for families. There are other concerns around Palmiste Park- loud music, etc, etc, that will also be handled. Had the continued presence of the caiman caused injury to someone, there would have been an outcry over our inaction. It's a balancing act. I will provide more details, as required" - Senator Clarence Rambharat

Local Oil Companies ~ Halliburton-Baker Hughes

The Halliburton-Baker Hughes Merger Has Been Called Off - Baker Will Go It Alone

Halliburton and Baker Hughes announced on Sunday that the companies have terminated the merger agreement they entered into in November 2014.

Obtaining regulatory approval for the $35bn transaction proved to be an impossible task. US and international bureaucrats could not get comfortable with the market share consolidation the deal would have brought despite the large asset sales both companies agreed to.

Wall Street has been skeptical of the deal's chance to close for over 10 months. The deal would have been the largest in oil service history.

After The Break-up, What's Next For The Companies And Employees?
The break-up has some big implications. Here are a few:

Halliburton will pay Baker Hughes a termination fee of $3.5 billion by Wednesday, May 4, 2016. Baker Hughes plans to use the cash influx to buy back shares totaling $1.5bn and debt totaling $1bn.

For Halliburton, the cash outlay is not easy to stomach in the downturn, but for Baker Hughes the break-up may be much more painful. The company's competitive position is thought to have been eroded while it waited on the deal to close (Halliburton would have been the surviving entity). The question now becomes whether Baker can thrive as a standalone entity (see Oilpros discuss this issue here).

In answer to the question above, Baker Hughes has outlined its path forward. The company is taking immediate steps to remove significant costs that were retained in compliance with the merger and evaluating broader structural changes to improve efficiency and cut costs (targeting $500mm in annual savings by year end). Baker is also changing its go-to-market strategy, including rationalizing its sales channels and full service footprint. In pressure pumping, Baker is shrinking its footprint (while preserving expansion options) to improve cash flow.

Planned asset sales at each company will no longer go forward, and the companies will retain the business units they had planned to sell to appease regulators.

Employees of both companies can breath a sigh of relief. Had the deal gone through, many jobs would have been cut to deliver cost synergies and eliminate redundancies. While the companies may lay off more workers in the downturn, fewer jobs will be lost with the merger terminated.

The implications for competitors Schlumberger and Weatherford are mixed. On the one hand, a combined Halliburton/Baker would have reduced the number of bidders, potentially enabling higher oil service pricing. But together, Halliburton/Baker would have been a more formidable competitor. With Baker now potentially crippled by the break-up, the rest of the large cap service companies may be able to take market share. Schlumberger loved the deal when it was announced, and it turns out the distraction was much larger than they could have ever imagined.

Here's What The CEOs Said About The Mega-Merger's Unhappy Ending
“While both companies expected the proposed merger to result in compelling benefits to shareholders, customers and other stakeholders, challenges in obtaining remaining regulatory approvals and general industry conditions that severely damaged deal economics led to the conclusion that termination is the best course of action,” said Dave Lesar, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Halliburton. “I sincerely thank both our employees as well as the Baker Hughes employees for their tireless efforts throughout the regulatory review process. While disappointing, Halliburton remains strong. We are the execution company – our strategy, technologies and service quality are focused on helping customers maximize production at the lowest cost and driving industry leading growth, margins and returns.”

“Today’s outcome is disappointing because of our strong belief in the vast potential of the business combination to deliver benefits for shareholders, customers and both companies’ employees,” said Martin Craighead, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Baker Hughes. “This was an extremely complex, global transaction and, ultimately, a solution could not be found to satisfy the antitrust concerns of regulators, both in the United States and abroad. As we turn the page on this chapter, I want to thank our customers for their patience and continued loyalty over the past 18 months. I also want to thank the entire Baker Hughes team for their unwavering dedication and commitment during this process. Baker Hughes is strongly positioned to build on its foundation and heritage as a technology innovator that differentiates for our customers and delivers compelling value to shareholders.”
