Man's arm severed by truck

Postby fozzy2010 » January 6th, 2017, 1:27 pm

Police are investigating reports that a 54-year-old man lost his arm while driving in Penal on Thursday.

According to initial reports, 54-year-old Liston Aberdeen was driving along the Penal Rock Road, with his hand outside his vehicle when a truck passed in the lane opposite him.

The truck came into contact with Aberdeen's right arm, severing it from just above the elbow.

The police and emergency health services were notified and the wounded man was rushed to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was treated.

Up to 6:00 am Friday, Aberdeen was said to still be warded in a serious but stable condition.

Police are calling on members of the public to be wary of the dangers of driving with their arm's outside of their cars, noting that it was not an "old woman's tale" and was quite dangerous, as Aberdeen's case demonstrated.

More on this as it becomes available.

Lard just a few weeks ago I was telling someone this. All it takes is for someone to rub down your broadside and is your arm going too.
How many times you see people's wing mirrors "lick way". That means a vehicle was that close, could easily be your arm.

Real tough on him. That would have been a scary scenario for him...

Never understood why people still continue to do this. This also will most likely not deter some of them.

So, is this just a left over bad habit by older drivers from their hand turn signal days? Always wondered why drivers do this?

Of course they can't plant it and grow a new one.

It was probably mangled where it was severed making it impossible to reattach. I dunno

There are a lot of factors that would influence the viability of a severed limb for reattachment. Tissue condition (if the tissue had began dying due to the arm not being gotten into surgery fast enough or put on ice (not in direct contact with the ice of course), then it won't be able to be reattached as you'd risk sepsis. Also, it depends on the extent of damage to the limb as well. Given that it was hit by a truck it may have been too mangled to be viable. Additionally, if the muscles had began to deteriorate, release of the byproducts of this could have systemic consequences resulting in crush syndrome or. Similar so I'd say that would. Have to be taken into consideration when assessing limb viability.

I do this all the time. The breeze felt on my arm feels like a nice massage. Relaxing to chill with you arm out the window just enjoying the breeze on the way home after a long day at work...

... however... after seeing this I'm never doing that again.

Was behind the truck when this happened. Almost ran over the hand. Guys hand was outside at a narrow part in the road. There is a narrow bridge crossing 2 cars can barely pass. It really sucks to be in that situation. Keep your hands inside always
