Withdrawing cash in the USA

Postby Emmar01 » March 1st, 2017, 3:32 pm

Is it still possible to withdraw cash at a US ATM with an RBC credit card?

Shouldn't be a problem at any atm displaying the Visa logo....as long as you know your PIN. Cash-advance fees will apply, plus any foreign transaction fee.

credit cards usually charge a one time cash withdrawal fee AND start charging interest on what you took out immediately. So best when you return you head straight to the bank and pay it off or online.

Last time I checked if card was paid off immediately or next day, the fees worked out to about 7.1 or 7.2

there would be a daily limit though
call your bank locally to raise the limit and tell them you going to be using it abroad to withdraw cash otherwise you might find it getting declined as an unauthorized or suspicious transaction

Cash -advance fees will still apply even if you withdraw the "excess" credit.

Just asking, why withdraw cash if you could pay for whatever with the card?

yes it would and plenty of those banks dont allow you to pay extra to a card anymore because of the foreign exchange shortage

I haven't banked with RBC in quite a while so I'm not sure what their ATM cards are like now, but if the card has the Cirrus logo on the back of it you can use that to withdraw cash at foreign ATMs ( which display the Cirrus logo) instead of using your credit card. I've used my Scotia Bank atm card to withdraw cash in the US, UK and Canada....only costs about 20 TTD per transaction.

No cash advance fee. ...just the service fee. Money comes directly out of your bank account....at whatever the prevailing exchange rate is...

So if i credit my card with say tt$20k before i fly out and then withdraw the equivalent in Miami, i still get charged a cash advance fee? I can understand the withdrawal fee and forex fee but not the cash advance..

I used my Scotiabank debit card to withdraw US$ from a US atm and there were no issues. Had to pay usual fees and exchange rate etc.
There was a US$200.00 daily limit though.

Would a credit card limit be higher though... maybe linked to your spending limit?

Really? I've never been aware of any limit. Which bank in the US?

I think the daily limit is that of your debit card. It's the same daily limit that the card carries for local ATM withdrawals

There will still be a daily limit when using the ATM with your CC.....either set by your bank or by the dispensing bank. If you want to withdraw cash using your credit card and are fine with paying the cash advance fees then you can go into any bank and get a cash advance over the counter....walk with your passport. You should be able to access as much as your credit limit and available credit will allow. Just be sure you contact your local bank and inform them that you will be doing this beforehand, because they might block your account if they are suspicious of the transaction.....then you'll have no credit card for the rest of your trip.

yes.

provided that it's either VISA, Mastercard or Cirrus.

Any ATM with these should be good for use.

200 US? did Scotia set that? I've used a Cirrus card even abroad and it was OK.

I think the OP just needs cash for smaller transactions that can't be done with a credit card...like tipping or paying for a taxi, etc.

In relation to the advance cash withdrawal, the banks charge you a standard withdrawal fee for using the card, the exchange rate, a transaction fee for withdrawing in a different country (bank to bank) plus a percentage of the overall amount being withdrawn (I believe is 3%).

What i'm getting at is, given the current situation with getting us$ in TT, what stops someone from withdrawing two or three thousand usd in cash while they're on holiday there to bring back here?

nothing.

I'm not sure of the customs laws, but then I doubt it's illegal to bring in any foreign currency per se. You would just have to declare it at customs.

Sure, but only if its over us$10k I believe. That's the declaration limit for customs.

I've used different banks ATM machines and the limit was always $200 us. This is the highest quantity option the machines give you. This was with my VTM card from rbl.
