AK47s in 2 dog food shipments at Bond

Postby @lex » June 1st, 2017, 9:40 am

Law enforcement officers yesterday raised concerns about the security in place at this country’s ports of entry, after they discovered three high-powered assault rifles - AK47s - in a barrel containing loose dog food at the El Socorro Bond area of Piarco Air Services.

Apart from the seized weapons, however, Customs officers realised that about seven or eight more units (weapons), together with 5.5 ammunition and caches of assorted ammunition and magazines for Mac10 and 11s, were cleared undetected by a first consignee just a few minutes before they made the second discovery and seizure of the AK47s.

According to a source at the bond, two barrels of dog food originating from Canada were consigned to two different people through the same shipping company. The two consignees came around the same time, around 10 am, to clear the barrels.

The first consignee managed to get the barrel cleared and left, but when the second consignee came and checks were made the AK47s were found as the loose dog food shifted, causing the weapons to be exposed.

The second consignee was up to late last night assisting a team of officers from the Organised Crime and Narcotics Unit and Customs and Excise Division in their investigations.

The source said when the discovery were made and further checks conducted on the shipping documents, the officers found the barrels came from the same Canadian shipping company but to two different people.

“This is very frightening to know that these weapons which are deemed to be serious underworld criminal equipment has entered the country,” the source said.

Also contacted yesterday, Canadian source said semi-automatic firearms such as the AK47s are illegal in Canada and it is believed the weapons were shipped to Canada from the United States to be shipped out to T&T to make it look like they originated from Canada.

The Bond source explained that the consignee would come with the relevant documents to clear the barrels.

“In this case an address of the consignee would have been presented but no one will prove the address, especially when it is not specifically addressed to a company, meaning that it could be any address, make believe address even,” the source said.

“Sometimes consignees just agree to come clear a barrel and wouldn’t know its contents, but the sender will have to know its contents. In this case, the Customs officers would have been unaware because they treat it as just dog food and worse if its loose so they would not be carrying out a 100 per cent check.”

A gun dealer, who wished not to be identified, told the T&T Guardian that weapons of this calibre can be sold for over TT$30,000 or more.

Yesterday, during the weekly T&T Police Service media briefing, acting ASP Michael Sooker disclosed that in the month of May 18 firearms were seized in the North Eastern Division, eight of which were recovered over the last week.

Contacted last night on the find, Acting Commissioner of Police Stephen Willliams said he could not confirm details.

“One of the things is that I cannot confirm. I am aware of certain work being done there this morning but I would not be in a position to give an update on the finds.”

Efforts to reach Minister of National Security Edmund Dillon for comment were unsuccessful as calls to his phone went unanswered and a text message was not replied to up to press time.

Piarco Air Services is a company, they have bonds in 2 or 3 places (or more? idk)
but they run the bond up by the old airport in piarco for goods that come in on planes
as well as that one in el socorro for barrels that come in via sea shipment

basically them companies abroad would load up a 20 or 40 foot container goods for different people locally, a barrel for mamoo, a barrel for mukesh, some ak47s for george and then PAS cargo would receive and unstuff and container and deal with all the different people who come to clear their single barrels....and charge a admin fee for doing so

It have a bond in mc bean as well but i dunno who one that is

A bond is a segregated area that import ed goods can be held in until cleared by customs.

In this case it's off site of the ports...
Co s will use this to uh facilitate their businesses

They x-ray the barrels just before the customs officer opens them up, no? What is that machine they put every single barrel through at Laparkan? I assume every bonding/clearing area will have one. If so, I don't see how customs could possibly miss weapons coming in barrels. Drugs maybe.

I hope Customs in Canada currently busting the addresses these were picked up from and link it back to a source.

Trini woman gets 70 months in jail
FRANCIS JOSEPH Saturday, December 17 2005

A 45-year-old Trinidadian housewife was yesterday sentenced to 70 months in jail in Florida for conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States.

Indaryartee Dwarika, formerly of Red Hill, D’Abadie, pleaded guilty recently to the charge before Judge James Cohn in the United States Federal Court in Fort Lauderdale. Sentencing was then postponed to yesterday.

When Dwarika appeared in court yesterday, she confessed to being part of the group of persons involved in packaging the cocaine among cassava for shipment to the United States.

Dwarika said when members of the Organised Crime and Narcotics Unit (OCNU) raided the warehouse at Freeport on January 22, 2001, the cocaine was already packed in crates, ready for shipment. She however, denied that the police caught them packing the cocaine.

Dwarika, who was extradited to the United States on June 30, struck a deal with the US Attorney’s Office where two other charges were dropped once she pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge.

Cohn did not say much in his sentencing. He said Dwarika, by her plea, escaped a lengthy jail term which could have been between ten years to life imprisonment.

He gave her time off for time spent in prison in Trinidad awaiting extradition, as well as the six months she spent in a Florida prison pending yesterday’s sentencing.

Dwarika was represented by US attorney Jeffrey Wrenkle, while assistant US attorney Andrea Hoffman appeared for the government.

Dwarika was one of three persons extradited to the US this year for conspiracy to import cocaine, as well as possession of a prohibited drug. Ronald Rackal and Hafeez Mohammed were extradited to Miami on May 5.

Mohammed and Rackal were charged with conspiring to traffic cocaine, and the importing and exporting of cocaine between November 30, 2000 and January 22, 2001.

Mohammed, Rackal, and Dwarika were arrested and charged with Jitman Sookdeo, 35, Ramesh Doon, 21, and Andre Ravi Persad, after they were found by members of the OCNU at a warehouse at Orange Field Road, Freeport, on January 22, 2001, with 542 kilos of cocaine stacked among cassava. The US also attempted to have Doon extradited, but withdrew the application earlier this year.

The DPP subsequently discontinued charges against Mohammed, Rackal, and Dwarika while Sookdeo has jumped bail.

FRANCIS JOSEPH Wednesday, November 16 2005

RONALD RACKAL, who was considered the mastermind behind the hauling of $204 million in cocaine in Central Trinidad in 2001, has been sentenced to 21 years and ten months in a Florida prison.

Rackal, 38, of Chenette Drive, El Socorro, San Juan, was sentenced to 262 months by Judge James Cohn in the United States District Court in Fort Lauderdale last week.

Another Trinidadian, Hafeez Mohammed, 29, of Globe Lane, San Juan, who was also charged, was sentenced to 135 months (11 years and three months) in jail after he pleaded guilty to charges of trafficking cocaine and conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States

A CRIMINAL deportee and suspected drug dealer was found tied up and shot dead yesterday in a field in Central Trinidad.

As a result, the country’s mur der toll stood at 59 up to last night.

The murder toll at the same time last year stood at 81.

Police last night were searching for two suspects while a man believed to have transpor ted them remained in police custody.

Police said around 12.45 p.m. yesterday, the victim, Hafeez Mohammed, also called “Ram Indo Trini”, was kidnapped by two men from a house in Central and brought to Babonia Trace, off Warrenville, Cunupia.

He lived in La Canoa, Santa Cruz, but yesterday, he was at a friend’s house in Central.

After he was abducted, seve ral people who saw what had happened telephoned the police.

A description of the vehicle was given to the police and some one told investigators the car was seen heading to Warren ville.

Central Division officers, led by Snr Supt Johnny Abraham, later went to the scene and fol lowing a brief search with tracker dogs from the Police K9 Unit, the body was found in some bushes.

Police said Mohammed had gunshots to his hands, head and chest.

Abraham also ordered that all roads leading out of the area

be manned by police and as a result, the getaway vehicle was spotted and its driver held.

The two murder suspects escaped on foot.

Abraham told reporters on the scene yesterday that Moham med was well known to them, and after being deported to Tri nidad from the United States where he served time for narco tics dealing, he resumed his trade here.

I remember a Ronald Rackal from form 6. He had some barbering skills back then. Wonder if it's the same person.
